Is There a Reappearing Rabbit Trick?
Dave Mance III

For those not familiar with this critter, the New England cottontail's story is a quirky one. Used to be that this was our New England rabbit (it was your rabbit in New York, too). But by the latter half of the 20th century, it was in decline...

Silverfish: Lurking in a Bathroom Near You

Bill Amos

This afternoon, a 390-million-year-old thysanuran paid me a visit on my desk. It wasn't really that old, just a little creature whose uninterrupted ancestry dates back at least that far. It's called a silverfish. It's also a nuisance...

Our Weekly Guessing Game!

Our Facebook friend Terry Holden took this picture of a yellow birch in Cambridge, Vermont. What caused the tree to grow in this funky manner?

Every other week we run a photo of something unusual found in the woods. Guess what it is and you'll be eligible to win a copy of The Outside Story, a paperback collection of our Outside Story newspaper columns. A prize winner will be drawn at random from all the correct entries. The correct answer, and the winner's name, will appear in next week's column.

blob Last Week's Contest Answer

Congratulations to our winner, Arianna Alexsandra Grindrod of Andover, MA! Arianna receives a copy of our book, The Outside Story.

This beautiful blob was photographed recently near our office. What is it? Bonus points will be given for telling us what it's doing.

NW Answer:
This blob is the fruiting body of witch's butter, Tremella mesenterica or Tremella aurantia. Both of these species grow on decaying hardwood. A catch, though, is that witch's butter is not decomposing dead wood, it's parasitizing other fungi that are decomposing the dead wood. Witch's butter can be found throughout the year during wet weather. It shrivels up when dry, but will resume its gelatinous form after the next rain.
