Last Week's Contest Answer
Congratulations to last week's winner, Marie Read of Freeville, NY. We had 11 correct answers! Marie received a copy of our book, The Outside Story.
"You're kayaking on a
lake or small stream. Strange-looking dollops of mud, like the one shown here,
dot the shoreline. What is it?"
Answer: A beaver scent mound, or castor mound.
In spring, 2-year-old beavers disperse from their home ponds
and go looking for a new place to live. Resident beavers, being territorial,
create "castor mounds" as a way of telling these dispersing two year olds to go
away. Essentially, the mounds are the beaver equivalent of a NO TRESSPASSING
sign.
Beavers build these mounds by dredging up mud from the
bottom of ponds or rivers. They then straddle the mud pile, arch their backs,
and expel castoreum from their castor glands (located near the anus).

The mission of the Center for Northern Woodlands
Education is to encourage a culture of forest stewardship in the
Northeast by producing and distributing media content to increase
understanding of and appreciation for the natural wonders, economic
productivity, and ecological integrity of the region's forests. Our
programs give people the information
they need to help build a sustainable future for our region. Through
Northern Woodlands magazine, the Northern Woodlands Goes to School
program, and special
publications, we make a difference in how people care for their land.
