NW Woodpecker logo WELCOME TO THE NW NEWSLETTER!

Dear Friends,

We'd like to welcome you to the inaugural edition of Northern Woodlands News - our brand new electronic newsletter. Each Friday morning, you'll receive a fresh newsletter in your email in box. Content will include our syndicated nature column (The Outside Story), an Editor's blog, and a new guessing game entitled: What in the Woods is That? Guess the natural object in the picture, and you'll be eligible to win a prize.

We view this newsletter as a great way to share our mission with a wider audience, and hope that if you like what you read here, you'll share it with a friend. Rest assured, we won't be sharing any email addresses with any third parties. And you're welcome to opt out of the newsletter at any time.

Since this is the first mailing of our newsletter, we would love to hear your response. If you have any problems viewing the content, or have other general feedback you'd like to share, please contact Lora Nielsen.

Thanks so much for your help.

Our Weekly Guessing Game!

"You're kayaking on a lake or stream. Strange-looking dollops of mud, like the one shown here, dot the shoreline. What is it?

Each week we run a photo of an unusual natural object. Guess what it is and you'll be eligible to win a copy of The Outside Story, a paperback collection of our Outside Story newspaper columns. A prize winner will be drawn at random from all the correct entries. The correct answer, and the winner's name, will appear in next week's column.

Congratulations to John Douglas, last week's winner!

"Boo! What in the woods, or more accurately, the swamp, is this?"

The hooked nose and baleful eye in this picture could only belong to a snapping turtle. Common throughout New England, snappers act as the garbage men, and tough guys, of aquatic ecosystems.

Special thanks to photographer Ken Thomas for the use of this wonderful picture.

The mission of the Center for Northern Woodlands Education is to encourage a culture of forest stewardship in the Northeast by producing and distributing media content to increase understanding of and appreciation for the natural wonders, economic productivity, and ecological integrity of the region's forests. Our programs give people the information they need to help build a sustainable future for our region. Through Northern Woodlands magazine, the Northern Woodlands Goes to School program, and special publications, we make a difference in how people care for their land.
