The midrash (rabbinic commentary on Torah), in trying to understand why Israel was granted the Torah, teaches that it is because Israel offered its children as guarantors.  The older generation understood that God's message to the world through the Jewish people depended on transmitting that message to the children, in each and every subsequent generation.  Ramah Outdoor Adventure, as the first Ramah specialty camp and the signature program of the new Ramah in the Rockies, is devoted to this mission.  Come visit us this summer and see this in action for yourself!

Over several Sundays in May, nearly 50 volunteers spent time at the site preparing for camp's opening.
Projects accomplished included:
*Over 200 saplings were planted in the initial reforestation effort to repair 80 acres burned in the 2002 Heyman Fire. (Thanks to leader Laura Cher)
*Nine tents were erected on newly constructed tent platforms (Thanks to leader Don Skupsky)
*A beautiful wildflower garden was planted at the camp entrance, in the shape of a Jewish star!  (Thanks to leaders Jerry and Susie Katz)
*6 pullets (baby hens) and a hen were welcomed to their new summer home.  (Thanks to leader Kimberly Turnbow)
*An amazing crew is of volunteers is working with Miki Gooding, Ranch Manager, doing painting, masonry, plumbing, electrical and more!

chickensAnd at the Camp We Had Some...Chickens!

Koby Gruenwald (future Ramah camper) is introduced to the 12 week old chickens by one of their caretakers, Julia Turnbow.

The chickens are an initiative of the Sustainability Committee, organized by Kimberly Turnbow.  They will summer at Ramah in the Rockies, where the campers will learn to care for them as part of their community service work.  We hope to increase our 'farm' each year, using vegetable scraps from the kitchen to help feed them, and composting their manure for the wildflower garden.  All part of our work to create a 'permaculture' at the camp.

Major Gift Announced

Ramah in the Rockies has been awarded a generous grant by the 18 Pomegranates Foundation of Boulder, CO.

Some of the funds will be used to build a new pavilion for summer 2011, our first new structure on the property.  The pavilion will be a sheltered gathering area for campers and staff where communal activities (learning, meals, activities, singing and dancing) can take place.  It will replace a temporary tent being used for this year.  With the possibility of afternoon thunderstorms, a protected indoor shelter is critical.

Other funds will be devoted to scholarship to offset the cost of camp.  We do not want to turn away any campers due to inability to pay.
We thank 18 Pomegranates for their amazing and generous gift!
