Running From Cataracts!

Girl Running
Recent studies involving 41,000 runners in the past seven years revealed that men who ran more than 5.7 miles per day had a 35 percent lower risk of developing cataracts than men who ran less than 1.4 miles per day.

One possible explanation is that exercising decreases C-Reactive protein, a protein indicating inflammation.  Elevated C-Reactive protein has been linked to cardiovascular diseases.  Recent studies suggest that patients with elevated C-Reactive protein are more prone to cataract formation!

 Realistically, moderate exercise can help decrease C-Reactive protein.  This includes 30 minutes of aerobic exercise a minimum of 3 times per week

Dangers Of Second Hand Smoke
cancer stick
In addition to the well know complications of Emphysema from second hand smoke, it has been recently identified as a risk for Macular Degeneration!  Macular Degeneration causes damage to the eye, eventually causing permanent blurred vision.
Second hand smoke contains Nicotine and Hydroquinone (main ingredient in Tar).  Recent studies by Duke University found that these 2 toxinselevates the risk of Macular Degeneration.  The United Kingdom study reports non smokers exposed to passive smoking has a 1.87 increased fold risk for Macular Degeneration. Finally new research shows that third hand smoke ALSO has Tar and Nicotine!

Progressive Lenses - Why Quality Counts!

distortion in cheap prog lens

An inferior quality progressive lens (usually found at many optical chains) will have peripheral distortions.

Notice the blurred areas ---->

You would not see this in a quality Varilux Lens.

Progressive (no-line bifocals) allows one to adjust for distance, intermediate, and near vision seamlessly.  The quality of progressive lenses is very important to adapt and see well!

A good quality progressive lens (example Varilux) will have minimal peripheral distortions!
