Greetings!
Extension has information in abundance to prepare you for the holiday season. Here are some websites you might like.
And as we reflect on summer and begin to embrace autumn, a well-deserved "kudos" goes out to the Master Gardeners and horticulture staff involved with this year's Smart Home garden at Museum of Science and Industry. The veggie garden was recently awarded First Place for Public Institutions City-wide from The Mayor's Landscape Awards Contest.
Enjoy the colors of autumn and have a Happy Thanksgiving.

Greenhouse at Cook County Jail Becomes Reality Inmates now able to learn and grow year-round
U of I Extension and the Cook County Sheriff's Department have more to be thankful for this Thanksgiving season. A beautiful 30 X 50 greenhouse has been erected at the site of the Cook County Jail Garden. The addition of the greenhouse will make planting, growing and education activities available to inmates nearly year-round.
Next year, a greenhouse management component will be added to the Master Gardener training that participating inmates receive. While growing the scope of the program, Extension and the Sheriff's Department are also working on growing opportunities for the additional harvests they will reap. Agreements have already been made with two prominent, local restaurants for herbs and microgreens.
The greenhouse may be operational as early as this winter. For more information on the Cook County Sheriff's Garden, or if you are a Master Gardener and wish to volunteer at this garden, contact Ron Wolford, urban horticulture and environment educator. | |
