Greetings!

Summer has been busy at Extension.  Our teams of educators are reviewing their Plans of Work, and we are coordinating with schools to help them meet the needs of their students and families during these difficult economic times.

We are committed to helping people put knowledge to work, and will continue to bring information, resources, and programs to the people of this county.

Please share your thoughts and ideas with us on how we can best work for and with you.

Sincerely,
Willene Buffett, Cook County Director

Master Composters show you how during our 2009 Composting Series

Brew a Batch of Compost Tea
Garfield Park Conservatory ~ 300 N Central Park Ave. ~ Chicago
August 15 ~ 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm

What is compost tea?

An old fashioned way of providing liquid fertilizer for plants is to brew compost tea. Similar to manure tea, compost tea gives your plants a good dose of nutrients. Compost tea works especially well for providing nutrients to new transplants and young seedlings.

Can't make the event, but want to know how to brew?
To make compost tea fill a burlap sack or an old pillow case with finished compost and secure the open end. Place in a tub, barrel, or watering can filled with water. Agitate for a few minutes and then let it steep for a few days. Water will leach out nutrients from the compost and the mixture will take on the color of tea. Spray or pour compost tea on and around plants. You can use the bag of compost for several batches. Afterwards, simply empty the bag's contents onto the garden.
