LET'S TALK ABOUT RATS!
 I could write about how many offspring a rat has a year or how large they can get, but I'm going to get to the point.
RATS GIVE HUMANS DISEASES!
The CDC has gathered information on the current diseases caused by rats.
Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome: A deadly disease transmitted by infected rodents through urine, droppings and/or saliva. Humans can contract the disease by breathing the aerosolized virus. This disease has two stages. The first appears between one and five weeks after exposure. The symptoms are Fatigue, fever, chills, muscle aches, bubbling or rattling sounds in the lungs, abnormally fast breathing, abnormally fast heartbeat, headaches, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain. (A detailed article on this syndrome will be in the June edition of The Bridge Business View.)
Eosinophilic Meningitis: An infection of the brain occurring in association with the increase in the number of eosinophils, white blood cells that are associated with infection with worms that penetrate into the body. The organism most commonly causing it is the Rat Lung Worm called Angiostrongylus Cantonensis. The symptoms are headaches and neck pain.
Salmonella Enterica Serovar Typhimurium: In humans the disease symptoms are diarrhea, abdominal cramps, vomiting and nausea that lasts for seven days. Can be fatal in the elderly, young, people with a depressed immune systems or people that do not get treated with antibiotics.
Murine Typhus: This disease is transmitted to humans by rat fleas. Flea-infected rats can be found in humid tropical environments. The symptoms are high fever, headaches, skin rashes, weakness,  muscle pain and sometimes inflammation of the heart muscle and brain.
Rat-bite Fever: It is a bacterial illness caused by Streptobacillus Moniliformis that is transmitted by a bite or scratch of a rodent or if you eat food or water contaminated with rat feces. The symptoms are fever, chills, rash, muscle pain, headache and vomiting.
Leptospirosis: A bacterial disease that affects humans and animals. Some people may not show signs and others will. The symptoms are high fever, severe headache, chills, muscle aches and vomiting and may also include jaundice, red eyes, abdominal pain, diarrhea or a rash.
 The scary part of this is would a doctor know what your illness is or how you got it? Would you see a doctor if you had some of these symptoms?

A temporary fix to rid the area of mosquitoes is Citronella candles.
The candles irritate their feet and makes them fly away, but does not kill them.
The decision to make is which is worse for your family; a mosquito bite and risk a disease or the bug sprays with all the chemicals.
Spraying clothes and not the skin is a better way to avoid the chemicals from going into the skin, but the chemicals are still inhaled.
