Tulsa Area United Way volunteers announced the 2011 Campaign Goal with the help of some exciting theatrics from Elot Caf's Luchador wrestlers. After five months and more than 5,000 volunteer hours from Community Investment panelists, the TAUW Board of Directors voted June 21 to set the goal at $24,556,573.

"As we prepare for this year's campaign, we are both optimistic and realistic. There are plenty of opportunities in our sights. We have found that as our economy continues to improve, the people and companies of Tulsa come through with generosity and giving spirits," said Jim Bender 2011 Campaign Chair. "We feel this goal will provide our 61 partner agencies with the necessary resources to meet the increased need for critical services in the Tulsa area."

The Campaign officially kicks off Sept. 9 with Day of Caring and continues through Nov. 10. To donate or for more information about running a campaign, call 918-583-7171 or visit www.tauw.org.

New PartnerNewAgencies Agencies Take Learning Seriously

TAUW has added two new partner agencies, both of which have met all our standards of excellence. Each agency has an education focus, which is one of our three building blocks to a better life. Crosstown Learning Center concentrates on early childhood development while KIPP Tulsa educates fifth through eighth graders.
Crosstown logo
Crosstown Learning Center is a nationally-accredited childcare center, the first of its kind in north Tulsa. Their Creative Curriculum encourages learning through the exploration of materials and focuses on the individual child, incorporating their needs into the classroom. Crosstown involves children, parents and members of the community in the learning process through parent education programs and a family support specialist on staff. Crosstown's mission statement is to provide educational opportunities in a nurturing environment for children and their families to learn and grow together.

Their goal is to do whatever it takes to ensure the students matriculate to college. KIPP operates according to a set of five core principles: (1)high expectations for academic achievement and conduct, (2)choice in participation and commitment to the program, (3)more time in the classroom, (4)power to lead and (5)focus on results with no shortcuts or excuses.
