Langhorne Council for the Arts invites you to attend a special program on "Arts and Wellness" on Saturday, September 24, from 9am - 1pm in Conference Room F at Aria Health (formerly Frankford Hospital), Bucks County Campus, located off Oxford Valley Road, across from Sesame Place. Participants will explore the energizing and restorative benefits of the arts through interactive presentations that include writing, art, movement, and music. See details on our presenters below.

This program is open to teens and adults who are interested in enhancing their own wellness through the arts, to caregivers, and to professionals in the health care field. No experience in the arts is required.   Bring your spouse, your friends, or just treat yourself to this inspiring program!

Dr. William Scarlett
Scarlett

Dr. William Scarlett is a board-certified surgeon in plastic and reconstructive surgery whose practice is in Bensalem. To facilitate the healing journey of his breast cancer patients, Dr. Scarlett initiated an art therapy workshop, which resulted in bras decorated in fancy, dramatic, and even humorous fashion, each telling a personal story through this creative medium. So powerful were the visual images and the stories behind them that the bras were displayed in a local museum where they could inform and inspire others on their journey. Subsequent workshops and even an art therapy cruise followed, each with similar dramatic results. Dr. Scarlett will share his experiences from these workshops and the benefits that the creative arts have brought to his patients.

Leslie Stickley
Leslie Stickley
Leslie Stickley began her journey with Bedside Harp in 2003 when, through a course at Bucks County Community College, she began fulfilling a lifelong dream to play the harp.  Since then, she has become a Hospital-Certified Master Harp Therapist, with over 300 hours playing time in hospitals, nursing homes, private homes, houses of worship, and museums.  Leslie believes passionately that soothing harp music helps the stressed medical staff as much as the patients and families she plays for.  What is it about the harp that makes it the ideal instrument of healing?  Leslie will answer that question and many others as she demonstrates the wonderfully resonating instrument which you, too, can learn to play.

Carol Zetterberg
Carol Zetterberg
Carol Zetterberg is an educator, writer, wife and mother, who has been honored at the White House for her environmental efforts as one of America's "thousand points of light." She founded several organizations, including Langhorne Open Space, Inc., for which she still serves as Director of Funding and coordinator of the Artists at the Farm program.  She teaches writing at the College of New Jersey, hosts a writers' group in Langhorne, and is a contributing writer to Guideposts magazine. Carol's compassionate eye sees things as they should be, then her creative energy and determination propel her to make this vision a reality. She is a long-time supporter of the arts, and has followed Virginia Woolf's advice to create "a room of her own" for her professional, personal, and community-spirited writing.

Edye Discount
Eyde Discount
Edye Discount, "the Pilates Therapist," once trained as a dancer and step aerobics instructor. Now she uses customized movement, stretching, and strengthening to help her clients, including geriatrics and people diagnosed with M.S., to overcome and prevent injury, maintain flexibility, and improve core strength. Edye's love of Pilates grew out of her own personal desperation to avoid surgery for excruciating back pain. After a few weeks of Pilates training with a physical therapist, Edye was able to strengthen the muscles in her injured area to the point where she is now pain-free. She subsequently became a certified Pilates instructor in 1997, and treats clients in various locations, including Synergy Rehabilitation and Chiropractic in Newtown, with the grace of a dancer and compassion of one who has been there. Edye will introduce our workshop participants to Pilates through a series of gentle movements and stretches that are sure to get creative juices flowing.

Nancy Beal
Nancy Beal
Nancy Beal is a certified Reiki Master, Master Harp Therapist, and Master of Himalayan Singing Bowls, who practices the healing arts at the Prancing Peacock in Yardley, among other places. What exactly are singing bowls? Where do they come from? What are they used for? How do they produce all those tones? What is it about them that draws us into their resonance? In this informative, relaxing and fun presentation called "Himalayan Singing Bowls-The Myths, Reality and the Experience," Nancy will discuss the mystery and history behind singing bowls, teach you how you can use them to deepen your yoga practice, your meditation and your experience of your deepest self.  You'll hear their songs up close and be treated to a short singing bowl session as you relax, unwind and decompress. Come hear the story of the singing bowls and experience a short session of deep and profound relaxation as their harmonics resonate throughout your body, taking you to deep levels of meditative rest through the healing vibrations of these magical, musical instruments.
