Community Quilt Update
|
Have you heard the word? It's hip to be SQUARE! Or, at least, to be represented by a square in the "Fabric of Life in Langhorne" Community Quilt Project! Haven't heard about the project yet? Click here to read all about it!
Response to the LCA Community Quilt Project has been great! In fact, we had sold out of squares and will be getting a new supply to Judy's Corner Frame Shop, 127 S. Bellevue Avenue in Langhorne Borough by Monday, August 17. Blank quilt squares are available for a donation of $5.00 each. You can also order quilt squares by mail; click here to download the order form. You must use the fabric squares that LCA provides to insure uniformity of the quilt.
Individuals, families, church congregations, community groups, and businesses are all encouraged to get creative! No quilting experience is needed -- squares can be decorated with paint, pen & ink, markers, glued items -- whatever works for you! We ask that you include, along with your square, a brief write-up of what your quilt square means to you. The deadline for submission has been extended to SEPTEMBER 30. Finished squares and write-ups must be returned to Judy's Corner by Sept. 30 to be included in the quilt which will be revealed at Harvest Day, Oct 31. Funds raised through the sale of fabric squares and the "Fabric of Life in Langhorne" anthology will support the Langhorne Council for the Arts scholarship fund. For more info, please email info@langhornearts.org or call Pat at 215-752-0854.
Need some ideas for your square? Here is a sneak preview of two squares that have been submitted. Additional squares will be featured in future LCA newsletters. Bernadette West submitted this mixed media square, a combination of crewel stitching and paint, that depicts her favorite activity, walking Lily the Lab around town. Writes Bernadette, "Langhorne is a wonderful little town to walk around, especially if you have a dog! Langhorne's streets are beautiful no matter what the season. People are always friendly and, everywhere you go, people are walking their dogs. or simply taking a walk. The open fields around the farm are a great place for a Frisbee toss!" Pat Mervine created this square depicting Oliver Heckman Elementary School, using applique of felt and buttons. Writes Pat: "As residents of Middletown Township, my family really became involved in Langhorne Borough when our son entered kindergarten at Heckman. His experiences in this wonderful "small town" school enriched us all, and served to acquaint us with the friendly folks, the many very active community groups, the history, and the beauty that makes Langhorne Borough a special place to live, learn, and work."So the big question now is: When the Community Quilt is revealed, will YOUR square be there?

Levittown series brings honors for LCA's Michael Wommack
Langhorne Council for the Arts is proud to announce Langhorne artist and LCA board member Michael Wommack has captured the attention of art lovers across the country with his Levittown drawings. Inspired by a dream of swimming in interconnected pools in the backyards of Juniper Hills, where he lived as a boy, Michael has created a magical world and touched on "the universality of the suburban experience." Michael's series has garnered awards at the Bayou City Arts Festival in Houston, Texas, Greater Reston Fine Arts Festival in Reston, Virginia and the Lakefront Festival of the Arts, Milwaukee Museum of Art, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Both a painter and printmaker, Michael has collaborated on numerous projects with architects and artists in the Philadelphia area, including Venturi Scott Brown & Associates and the Fabric Workshop and Museum. Michael works from his studios right here in Langhorne Borough with his very talented artist/wife Nina. While Michael's work is featured in galleries in New York, Atlanta and Nashville, the corporate collections of the Sun Oil Company, Johnson and Johnson, the Penn Mutual Insurance Co., Dow Chemical, Mobil Oil, and in private collections in Philadelphia, Denver, Milwaukee, Houston, Fort Worth and Washington, DC., he decided a few years back to take his art to the people. His next local show will be the Rittenhouse Square Fine Arts Show scheduled for Sept. 19 through 21. Though the magic and colors of the Levittown series can't be captured online, you can view images of the pastels and giclees that have captured the attention of art lovers across the country at http://wommackstudios.com/7501.html. Congratulations, Michael, on this well-deserved recognition! Vibrant pastels by Michael Wommack: Above: Cobalt RidgeRight: 300 Channels
