Reverse Mentoring
The traditional meaning of mentorship refers to a personal developmental relationship in which an older, more experienced or more knowledgeable person helps a younger, less experienced or less knowledgeable person. The receiver of mentorship was traditionally referred to as a protégé (thank you Wiki!). Reverse mentorship is incorporating the same idea but to the new generation called the millennial's. Demographically speaking, I am referring to the baby-boomer becoming a protégé of a more experienced and knowledgeable millennial with regards specifically to social media. These Echo Boomers (most of them are children of the baby-boomers!) live online and have been online for a large amount of their adult lives. Just to note: The millennial generation, also referred to as the Generation Next, or Net Generation roughly falls into the age category of mid-1970's to the early 2000's.
So, now what.... well it is safe to say we all know several family members, friends with children, and or grandchildren that fall into this demographic! You already know WHO they are... they text as much as they talk, Facebook on the fly about what means the most to them, and generally speaking are very engaged, interactive, and value-driven in their professional lives. An interesting statistic Terry mentioned was that they are very work centric, but also very family centric! They value balance, family, time with loved ones, and quality time more than the baby-boomer ever did!
As a business coach and successful entrepreneur, I always try and connect the dots and anticipate my customer's needs. I am writing this article with the intention to help you connect your own dots in growing your understanding of social media, and to make it proactively work for you, versus against, like it does for many...
Here are some tips to get started to develop a proactive and meaningful reverse-mentoring relationship!
1. Attitude. You will achieve what you believe. If you believe FREE Social Media tools like Facebook, Twitter, your own personal BLOG, and YouTube Video's are useful and have their place in your greater marketing tool box to connect and develop relationships then they will! But... if you continue to fall victim to the attitude and negative mindset that social media is just a fad, and only wastes people time, then you are not only wasting your time, but any potential business growth into the future.
2. Goals. Get specific about what you want and need to learn. Know your outcome before you get started. Start with some research on other travel entrepreneurs and then model what they have done! If you don't even know what you want and need to learn, then just ask some good questions. Not sure what questions to ask.... Start with these? What social media tool should I start with? Facebook is the obvious answer here... WHY? Your customers are here, it's free, and 500 million people can't be wrong! How often should I be online? As much as you can afford and budget into your larger marketing plan. Get disciplined and probably set aside 3 specific hours/ week to get started!
3. Connect. Check your ego at the door, and walk through that door called change, and simply talk about how you can get started to the right millennial. These caring young adults abound in our lives... maybe not physically living next door or in same city, but they are simply a phone call away (yes, the phone still has a place in our lives!). It's up to each individual to decide how to embrace, or not, social media business applications like Facebook, Twitter, You Tube, and a personal BLOG!
It just makes sense to connect with your millennial family member and or friend of a friend, because statistically they want and like to help others. Respect, relate and open up a little to their lives and priorities, and understand that social media is an extension of who they are and how they communicate, live, survive and thrive!
