Trinity Episcopal School
Fifth-grade Odyssey of the Mind Team
Advances to World Finals

CHARLOTTE, NC - After months of refining creative-thinking solutions and practicing spontaneous problem-solving skills, Trinity Episcopal School's Odyssey of the Mind (OM) team earned an invitation to the World Finals at Iowa State University, May 23-26.

Trinity Episcopal SchoolTrinity's "Odyssey Angels" (Division 1) team took first place out of 16 teams in the North Carolina Odyssey of the Mind tournament on March 31, 2012. Trinity's fifth-graders -- Heath Byrd, Amelia Faison, Shap McCoy, Malik McRae, Tate Pollock, Davis Ryan and Olivia Te Kolste -- will compete against other teams from around the world at the OM final competition.

Led by fifth-grade teacher and OM coach Monica Charlton, the team worked to create a performance in which a group of students travel throughout one or more team-created places where they encounter negative situations. The "Odyssey Angels" turned these situations into positive ones.

"The students worked very hard over the past few months. This team worked so well under pressure and they came together in the last few hours to fix sets, props and practice," said OM coach and teacher Monica Charlton.

This is the fourth consecutive year a team from Trinity has advanced to the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals.
