Living Joyfully

Hi Everyone,

Today we are likely to be bombarded with images and ideals of what our culture portrays as love: chocolates, roses, diamond rings; things money can buy. But we know that the experience of love is something quite different. When we feel love, we are outside of our ordinary thoughts, sometimes out of our minds indeed! Love is beyond what we usually think of as the mind. It is an experience of "no mind." We don't care what happens to us; we focus in on the Beloved and devote ourselves to him or her. On the other hand, when we get discouraged or angry or upset, chances are we have fallen out of this feeling, even if we still love the person. The feeling of real love is important to re-member. It is like samadhi (bliss) in heart chakraYoga. And the funny thing is, when we do get angry or upset or hurt, often love is the reason. We feel angry because there is something greater than the anger-provoking situation that we want to move forward into. We feel hurt because we wanted to feel loved but got something else thrown at us instead. Yet while other people certainly do love us, real love generates from within. When we are able to re-member this feeling, to pull it back together into wholeness, we are able to rise above our other petty thoughts and get to that sweet beyond-the-mind place again, even if things don't go our way. The truth is, we love all the time: we love the blue sky, the fresh air, the warmth of the sun, the freedom to move our bodies and to speak our minds. This is a gift coming our way from the universe. So much true love surrounds us everywhere we go. Let's remember this today and enjoy.

Namaste,

Erin

My favorite uncle is not really my uncle. He's my godfather, but growing up I always called him Uncle Pete. In one of my earliest memories, the whole family went out sledding in Peacham Vermont, with my mom, dad, sister, Aunt Barb, Uncle Pete, and their big fluffy dog, who we kept trying to get to pull our sleds. I don't remember much, except laughing a lot and feeling very very light in my heart. Uncle Pete always had a great big sly and woolfish grin, like he was in on the joke, and just waiting to see if you got it too. When I got a little older, but skayakerstill a child, I remember going to watch him race his kayak. We stood on a bridge, the white water of the swift river rushing below among the rocks and rapids. And then a rush of small blotches of color as the racers swept by in the mad and frothy current, urged on by a cheer they couldn't hear, unrecognizable.

Uncle Pete always lived large, laughing a lot, playing hard, finding the thrills in life both in the peak moments and in the quiet times. I don't think I've ever known anyone so fully alive. He even found that spark of life in his battle with brain cancer, which he faced like a sparring partner in his beloved karate practice. The patc

h he came to wear over his eye made him look like a pirate, a role that suited him well. I admire his bravery, and the way he sailboatfound humor in his plight, always ready to make a joke, or find one if any could be found. The last time I saw him, two years ago, we all went sailing, out on the ocean in Maine, riding the big, deep waves as we had done together many times before. But there was a touch of chill in the air. And later that summer, he entered his final battle with cancer, facing death with dignity and, as always, a wry smile.

I miss you Uncle Pete, and I always remember you with love. I would have liked for you to meet Ava, but I like to think that you are watching over us with a big, wolfish grin on your face, letting me know that everything is going to be okay.

Thank you, everyone, for supporting the American Cancer Society fundraiser this month. Here's to more smiles, and more birthdays.
Namaste,
Erin
