"If you are irritated by every rub, how will you be polished?"-Rumi I cam across this quotation by Rumi today and literally laughed out loud. Have you ever had one of those weeks where everything seems to turn out wrong? Rumi reminded me that every little setback and altercation is really just an opportunity to shine. If everything went our way 100% of the time we wouldn't have a chance to put our Yoga practice to the test, bear down, pull the chin up, and dig deep into our inner resources. It is the irritation, the pettiness, the sorrow, the meanness, the flash of anger, that comes as a sign from the inner teacher that more work remains to be done - that we are midway through the journey, not at the end, and that that is actually a wondrously good thing. If we were never scared, we would never have the opportunity to be courageous. If we were never angry, we would never have the opportunity to be just. If we were never hurt, we would never have the opportunity to empathize, to forgive, or to heal. What makes a pearl? Grit. What makes a diamond? Pressure. Because it teaches us how to be "in sensation," our Yoga practice helps us re-frame life's "rubs" as something to be welcomed, breathed through, and learned from. Our irritation serves no one, but getting ourselves polished serves everyone - our selves most of all. Namaste, Erin

| Yoga for Cross Country Skiers: A Workshop | | February 19, 2011! 2-4pm, $25
Make 2010 the best ski season ever with greater flexibility and strength, and fewer aches and pains. Yoga has many benefits for skiers. Yoga improves core stability and strength, builds flexibility and balance, strengthens bone, enhances muscle flexibility and tone, and boosts lung capacity. Learn Yoga techniques you can use at home to improve your skiing, and how to get the most out of your Yoga practices when you do attend class. "After about a week of practicing yoga, my skate glide improved about 25%. I really noticed a difference in the quality of my glide. I wasn't struggling any longer to step to and maintain a flat ski. Keep in mind that I had been skating skiing for over ten years before I first practiced yoga. With continued yoga practice, I began to understand the mechanics about rotating your hips under and lifting through the sternum, mechanics that improve the glide even further. That lift is also important in classic ski technique. And maybe most important, cross-country skiing is an exercise in awareness. Yoga is awesome in that regard as learning to pay attention to the little things, that mindfulness alone will take your cross -country skiing a long ways." - Chuck
