Living Joyfully: Satsang
Hi Everyone,
I was lucky enough to have tea with two of our wonderful instructors this week: Demi Langford and Lisa "Firefly" Johnston. It reminded me of how good it is for the mental health to have friends who can listen and help us think through our dilemmas. Everyone we encounter offers us a unique perspective on truth. As my Moo Gong Do teacher used to say, "even if I am lying to you I am speaking the truth." The truth has a way of making itself known to us, even in the midst of confusion, mixed messages, and downright lies. Demi shared a story with us that is particularly telling in this respect. Someone once asked the Dalai Lama who his greatest spiritual teacher was, naturally thinking Dalai Lamahe would say Gandhi, or Jesus, or some other famous and sacred luminary. The Dalai Lama replied, "Chairman Mao." In other words, the person who had caused the most destruction and violence to everything he held dear. Sometimes it is the people who most tear us down that provide the best spiritual instruction. We may not want to have them in our house, or invite them out to tea, but they can teach us the most about our inner convictions, our sense of self, spirit, and truth. So this week I am giving thanks both for those who listen and sympathize, and those who rub me the wrong way. Life isn't all rainbows and puppy dog tails. But when we learn to see the value in adversity, we come a lot closer to that proverbial pot of gold.
Namaste,
Erin
