Living Joyfully
|
| Hi Everyone,
Have you ever put your hand on a hot stove? It has probably been a long time, but I bet you still remember the feeling. As part of our physical development, we learn to understand and process the information we receive from our senses. We understand "too hot," we recognize that it means we should do something - in this case remove the hand! Our physical survival depends on developing this understanding. Sometimes, however, the development of our mental faculties takes a different turn. Have you ever had an angry thought? Have you ever visited it in your mind over and over, becoming even more angry? Me too! But this other kind of heat is just as dangerous to our mental & emotional life as keeping a hand on a hot stove after we realize it is too hot. Over time, it breaks down our nervous system by keeping us in a state of agitation. It creates patterns of thought in the mind that prevent us from taking a fresh perspective on the present moment. Chances are, the incident that made us mad is long gone. But the mind is still in the anger because we are holding it there. How can we learn to let go? All the emotions, anger included, are messengers. Like the fingertips sensing the stove, our emotions send us information to process. Once we acknowledge the sensation, in its purity, we can do something about it. What we need to do becomes clear when we learn how to clear the mind. Our Yoga practice helps us with all of this: we learn how to be with sensation, recognize it, acknowledge it, move through it. See you in class! Namaste, Erin

You Can Attain True Happiness A Dharma Talk with Visiting Teacher Hazlitt
|
|
Happiness is something we all seek, but how easy is it to attain? Actually,
it's easier than you think. If your hectic modern life doesn't give you the time
or ability for simple joy, why not try something that has worked for thousands
of years? Hazlitt can help you learn a few easy-to-use tools that make it easier
to understand, experience and realize your true happiness in the present moment. These liberating instructions are given freely with no expectation of reward,
but in accordance with Buddhist tradition, donations to the teacher are
needed and appreciated to pay for food and travel expenses to get to the next
teaching and to cover other incidentals such as his healthcare. Please
consider a donation of about $20 per session. No one will be judged or turned
away for lack of funds. All are welcome to attend at no cost! According to
Buddha's teachings, your generosity today is the root of your future prosperity.
Friday, May 21, 7:30 pm

Introduction to Yamuna Body Rolling
|
| What
is Yamuna Body Rolling? Come find out for yourself in this fun intro class, Saturday May 29.
YBR is a revolutionary
approach to health and fitness. Learn to work specific muscles in detail to create
suppleness in tight areas and optimize range of motion. It is like giving yourself a great massage - and anyone can do it! Introduction to Yamuna Body Rolling Saturday,
May 29, 1-2:30 pm $35
YBR reeducates muscles and
stimulates bones creating positive and permanent changes in the body.
Lying on the ball, you literally roll your body out almost like dough,
stretching and elongating your muscles. The YBR routines follow specific
sequences that match the body's own logic and order. Starting where
each muscle begins at its origin, you roll toward where it attaches to
the point called its insertion.
YBR is a natural complement to Yoga and Pilates: They
both eliminate stress and tension. After a class, you'll feel relaxed
and energized at the same time! You will improve your posture and
alignment. You'll get more energy and stamina. Find out first hand all the benefits of this amazing practice with local teacher Nathalie Chanut. Nathalie is the only Yamuna Body Rolling Instructor in the area, and her studio, Right to the Core, is right next door on Capital Hill. Introduction to Yamuna Body Rolling at Avenues Yoga Saturday,
May 29, 1-2:30 pm $35
