Living Joyfully
|
| My favorite uncle is not really my uncle. He's my godfather, but growing up I always called him Uncle Pete. In one of my earliest memories, the whole family went out sledding in Peacham Vermont, with my mom, dad, sister, Aunt Barb, Uncle Pete, and their big fluffy dog, who we kept trying to get to pull our sleds. I don't remember much, except laughing a lot and feeling very very light in my heart. Uncle Pete always had a great big sly and woolfish grin, like he was in on the joke, and just waiting to see if you got it too. When I got a little o lder, but still a child, I remember going to watch him race his kayak. We stood on a bridge, the white water of the swift river rushing below among the rocks and rapids. And then a rush of small blotches of color as the racers swept by in the mad and frothy current, urged on by a cheer they couldn't hear, unrecognizable.
Uncle Pete always lived large, laughing a lot, playing hard, finding the thrills in life both in the peak moments and in the quiet times. I don't think I've ever known anyone so fully alive. He even found that spark of life in his battle with brain cancer, which he faced like a sparring partner in his beloved karate practice. The patch he came to wear over his eye made him look like a pirate, a r ole that suited him well. I admire his bravery, and the way he found humor in his plight, always ready to make a joke, or find one if any could be found. The last time I saw him, two years ago, we all went sailing, out on the ocean in Maine, riding the big, deep waves as we had done together many times before. But there was a touch of chill in the air. And later that summer, he opted out of his final battle with cancer, facing death with dignity and, as always, a wry smile.
I miss you Uncle Pete, and I always remember you with love. I would have liked for you to meet Ava, but I like to think that you are watching over us with a big, wolfish grin on your face, letting me know that everything is going to be okay.
Thank you, everyone, for supporting the American Cancer Society fundraiser this past week. Here's to more smiles, and more birthdays. Namaste, Erin

Improve the Way you Run
|
|
Improve the Way You Run! Saturday April 10th, 1-6pm (the complete
version) $75 prepaid, $80 drop in
For many of us the way we develop our running style is by starting to
run - we just "run the way we run." Rarely is there a context where we can
return to exploring our running to see if it is as economical, as powerful or as
enjoyable as it could be. We might attempt to follow instructions from the
experts on the "best" foot strikes or arm swings or vary the shoes we wear - but
is there a way we could we find an internal compass which could reliably lead us
to strong, efficient, and graceful running, directed from the inside by our own
experience and awareness?
In this workshop we will do several Awareness Through Movement® lessons which can
both clarify our experience of the mechanics of running as well as awaken our
capacity to attend to many details of ourselves as we run. This
workshop is open to those who compete in races, those who have never run, those
who used to run but it hurt too much, and those who think that running is
impossible. The short running parts of the workshop are optional for
those with injuries, or who do not run, and the learning and discoveries in the
floor lessons (like most things Feldenkrais) can be applied to myriad aspects
of life beyond running.
If you'd like to repeat this workshop,
ask us about a discount for repeat students. To register for either or both
workshops, click here
