Living Joyfully

Even after all this timeflame
The Sun never says to the Earth, "You owe me."

Look what happens with a love like that
It lights up the whole sky
                                  -Hafiz

This weekend I had the honor and the pleasure of attending a celebration for a friend of mine who is expecting her first child. As part of the festivities, we did a ritual: we all wrote down the fears we had for her, fears that we wanted to banish, and anything we wanted to shed in that moment that might prevent us from being fully present. I carefully wrote my burdens and fears on the colored slip of paper. One by one we approached the tiny fire where incense was burning and watched as our troubled thoughts crinkled up in flame and curled away in the fragrant smoke.

I think that sometimes we're not aware of the burden we carry until we are asked to let it go. What a relief it was to take part in that simple yet profound act. This week in our Yoga practice, let's consciously do the same thing: Becoming aware of what interferes with our wholeheartedness, our generous impulses, our intention to be the best self we can be -- then letting that go.

See you in class,
Erin

American Cancer Society Fundraiser
Amy & husband
During the week of March 21-28, Avenues Yoga is teaming up with the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) to raise money for the fight to end cancer. Please consider coming to class prepared to make a small donation to this worthy cause. A banner will be on hand for us to sign as a testimony to our loved ones and to the ways cancer has touched our lives.

As part of the week's events, visiting master teacher Matthew Cohen has generously agreed to donate his time in teaching a class emphasizing the Healing aspects of Yoga. This class is free for cancer survivors and open to anyone else willing to make a donation to ACS CAN. Suggested donation $20.

Donation Class with Master Teacher Matthew Cohen Friday, Mar 26, 2:00-3:30, (free for survivors)

If you plan to attend this class, contact Erin by clicking here. Drop ins are welcoms, space permitting.

Improve the Way you Run
Improve the Way You Run!
Saturday April 10th, 1-6pm (the complete version) $75 prepaid, $80 drop in

For many of us the way we develop our running style is by starting to run - we just "run the way we run." Rarely is there a context where we can return to exploring our running to see if it is as economical, as powerful or as enjoyable as it could be. We might attempt to follow instructions from the experts on the "best" foot strikes or arm swings or vary the shoes we wear - but is there a way we could we find an internal compass which could reliably lead us to strong, efficient, and graceful running, directed from the inside by our own experience and awareness?

In this workshop we will do several Awareness Through Movement® lessons which can both clarify our experience of the mechanics of running as well as awaken our capacity to attend to many details of ourselves as we run.

This workshop is open to those who compete in races, those who have never run, those who used to run but it hurt too much, and those who think that running is impossible.

The short running parts of the workshop are optional for those with injuries, or who do not run, and the learning and discoveries in the floor lessons (like most things Feldenkrais) can be applied to myriad aspects of life beyond running.

If you'd like to repeat this workshop, ask us about a discount for repeat students. To register for either or both workshops, click here
