Living Joyfully: A Wild Patience
|

Hi Everyone, The New Year brings a time of yearning, of seeking out possibility, and a desire to act on that yearning and foster life change. The feeling can be almost frantic at times, as the mistakes of the past become clear, and the need for change becomes urgent. I was talking last night about this with a friend of mine, who brings a Buddhist perspective to bear on the issue. She shared that when the need for action seems most urgent, unless the situation actually is a life-or-death one, the better thing to do is to meditate, and to consider whether the course of action we're drawn to is in keeping with our core values. Often the sense of urgency comes from emotional turmoil, in the midst of which we're less likely to make good decisions about how to proceed. Our emotions, and their accompanying sense of urgency, are beneficial, because they help us to see clearly those things we're attached to. But they shouldn't be allowed to lead us, unless we are certain that the core value we hold most dear are being honored by that leadership. In Yoga the quality of ahimsa, or non-harming, is central to the process of understanding right action and taking it. Is the proposed action in keeping with the principle of non-harming? Is it merely selfish and shallow - or might it be of true and deep benefit to ourselves and those around us? Such reflections lead to resolutions that are in keeping with our core values, making them clear and easy to hold onto not only at the beginning of a new year, but for a whole lifetime. Namaste,
Erin

Kirtan! |
|
Come celebrate the New Year through song! Kirtan is a Sanskrit word meaning "repeat," and referring to joyous call-and-response singing with instrumental accompaniment. On January 23, 7 pm, Leraine Horstmanshoff is bringing Kirtan to Avenues Yoga for a night of musical delight. To listen, click here.
"When we repeat mantras and prayers [through song] we call the things we most
want to us. By combining the vibrations of music, love, appreciation
and connection, the energy rises and settles sweetly into the core of
our beings. Leraine has quickly become a master of this chanting style
and leads each group fluently along the sound currents which connect us
to the divine spirit that lives and flows in all things." To read more about Leraine and Kirtan, visit her website by clicking here.

The Elements of Practice
|
|
Peter is Back! Renowned Yoga teacher Peter Francyk returns to Salt Lake for this essential 2-day workshop. Whether you are a newcomer to Yoga who senses that there is more to the practice, or a long-time practitioner looking to deepen your connection in 2010, this workshop is for you.
According to Ayurveda, everything in the universe is made up of a combination of the five elements: Earth (Prithvi), Water (Apa), Fire (Tejas), Air (Vayu) and Space (A kasha). The human being also has 'soul' or 'spirit.' Understanding the ways in which these elements flow through and around us can deeply enhance both our personal Yoga practice and our class experience.
"The Elements of Practice" takes the Ayurvedic elements as the starting point for an exploration of the practice of Yoga on a deeply integrated level. Saturday Feburary 6 & Sunday February 7, 1-5 pm $100 for both days in advance,
or $60 per session day-of
