Living Joyfully: Restorative Yoga
|
|
In her book Relax and Renew: Restful Yoga for Stressful Times, Judith Lasater writes, "Stress begins with a physiological response to what your body-mind perceives as life-threatening. For our ancestors, this may have been defending against the aggression of a hungry animal. For modern-day humans, this may be living with the fear of losing a job in a sagging economy , or the health crisis of a family member... In a chronically stressed state, quality of life, and perhaps life itself is at risk. The body's capacity to heal itself is compromised, either inhibiting recovery from an existing illness or injury, or creating a new one, including high bloo d pressure, ulcers, back pain, immune dysfunction, reproductive problems, and depression. These conditions add stress of their own and the cycle continues." "The antidote to stress is relaxation. To relax is to rest deeply."
In keeping with what the Yoga tradition has long held true, and what western science is now 'discovering,' the mind and body are connected, and using asana and pranayama to bring the body-mind into a state of rest has many healing benefits - far more than sleep alone. Based on her training in the Iyengar tradition and her own experience as a Yogi, psychologist and physical therapist, Judith Lasater designed Restorative Yoga to help enable us to rest and renew, relieving and reversing the ravages of chronic stress.
We are so blessed to have Charlotte Bell teaching Restorative Yoga on Monday nights. And this Spring, Charlotte is bringing Judith Lasater to Salt Lake City for a 20-hour Relax & Renew Restorative Yoga Training, held February 6-10, 2010 at the Rose Wagner.
More information about the training is available on our poster board at the studio. If you are interested in taking this training, consider going as a group from Avenues Yoga and receive a discounted price. For details about this option, email me by clicking here.

Breathing Into Life - Feldenkrais |
|
Breathing into Life Saturday Dec. 12, 3-6pm with Erin & Carl
"The most basic criteria for assessing one's quality of life
is the quality of breath." So said Yvan Joly, one of our favorite
Feldenkrais teachers, and so true.
From our perspective, there's no one right way to breathe. However many of
us, quite unaware, carry habits and holding patterns which greatly diminish
the potential for our breathing to be spontaneous, free, and deeply
nourishing of our quality of life in each moment. Join us for this afternoon
exploration of breathing through gentle
Awareness Through Movement lessons, and allow your breath to find its
way back to spontaneous freedom. As the saying goes, "free your breath, free
your life."
$40 prepaid, $45 drop in Preregister by visiting our events page
Feldenkrais
represents a revolution in human health.
