Living Joyfully: Flexibility
|
|
Hi Everyone!
I was reading in The New Yoga for Healthy Aging this week about flexibility. As you might expect, Yoga is one of the best life technologies to aid the body in remaining supple and limber throughout the entire life span. Of course, this is important on the physical level, but perhaps even more so on the spiritual. I remember my teacher, Nischala Devi, discussing the Yoga theory of the koshas. The koshas are the illusory layers of of our being, of which the physical body (or ana maya kosha) is merely the most obvious and evident. At the other end, more subtle but more powerful and essential, is the bliss layer, the ananda maya kosha. Wouldn't it be nice to live in a state of bliss?
Actually, Yoga promises that that layer is indeed available to every one of us. For myself, I think that one of the keys to resonating with the ananda maya kosha is an atunement to ways of being flexible. When the physical body feels stiff and sore, we get stuck at the ana maya kosha, the layer of physical being. It is hard to think of anything else when your back hurts! But when we take time to care for the physical body (which means being flexible with balancing our schedule to make time!) we begin to align all the other layers of our being as well: our breath, our mind, our sense of energy. We then are able to tune in to the wisdom that surrounds us (vijnana maya kosha) on a much deeper level, and healthy care for self and world become second nature.
This week, let's be flexible with our time, making time for physical practice as a way to increase our physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing. Not only will we live more fully and joyfully in the present moment, we'll be taking one more step toward a consistent practice that increases health and vitality for a richer and more enjoyable lifetime! Om Shanti, Erin
p.s. Deep Relaxation this week will include a Yoga Nidra meditation to attune all five of the maya koshas: body, breath, mind, wisdom, and bliss. I hope you'll join us!

Yamuna Body Rolling
|
|
Named after its inventor, Yamuna Zake, Yamuna Body Rolling is a unique system providing
health, fitness and massage-all rolled into one. YBR
reeducates muscles and stimulates bones creating positive and permanent
changes in the body. Lying on the ball, you literally roll your body
out almost like dough, stretching and elongating your muscles. The YBR
routines follow specific sequences that match the body's own logic and
order. Starting where each muscle begins at its origin, you roll toward
where it attaches to its point of insertion. In the Introductory Workshop you w ill learn how to use the Yamuna Body Rolling balls to work specific muscles in detail, creating suppleness in tight areas and optimizing your range of motion. Best of all, you'll know how to practice these techniques on your own. A second workshop will be held on December 5 to take the practice deeper and explore other areas of the body. Instructor Nathalie Chanut is the only Yamuna Body Rolling Instructor in the area - aren't we lucky she's here? Visit Nathalie's studio website to learn more by clicking here. Workshop II 12/5, 3-6 pm Single Workshop cost: $120
