| Living Joyfully: Immune Booster |
|
Hi Everyone!
I thought I'd share some *good* news about health this week. In his book Yoga as Medicine, Doctor and Yogi Tim McCall writes, "The practice of Yoga appears to improve immune function in part by lowering levels of the stress hormone cortisol, and Yoga asana may boost immunity by improving the circulation of lymph, a fluid rich in disease-fighting white blood cells like lymphocytes. Yoga also encourages healthy behavioral change, which can counteract the tendency of people under stress to eat poorly, get too little sleep, and be less than meticulous in [following a healthy regimen]." Heart openers are particularly good to practice as cooler weather approaches because they stimulate the thymus gland, the seat of the immune system. And anything that helps you relax will greatly benefit the nervous system, helping the body-mind to de-stress, which in turn leads to more resilient immune function. Yoga is n't the only way to improve overall health, but it certainly is a fun way.
While we're on the topic of health and well-being, I'm excited to share that we've got two great events coming up: a nutritional workshop with the Holistic Gourmet (our own Pati Reiss) - "Eating Well for Health & Pleasure - October 17, and "Pranafication" a workshop with Jami Larson on November 14 to detox, cleanse and heal.
So save those dates and give yourself some of that good Yoga medicine this week!
Namaste, Erin

Improve
the Way You Run! Saturday Sept. 19th, 1-6pm |
|
A
Feldenkrais workshop with Erin Geesaman Rabke and Carl Rabke
Many of us develop our running style by starting to
run - we just "run the way we run." Rarely is there a context
where we can return to exploring our running to see if it is as
economical, as powerful or as enjoyable as it could be. We might attempt
to follow instructions from the experts on the "best" foot
strikes or arm swings or vary the shoes we wear - but is there a way we
could we find an internal compass tha t can reliably lead us to strong,
efficient, and graceful running, directed from the inside by our own
experience?In
this workshop we will do several Awareness Through Movement® lessons
which can both clarify our experience of the mechanics of running as
well as awaken our capacity to attend to many details of ourselves as we
run. As Moshe Feldenkrais often said, "When you know what you are
doing, you can do what you want." Do you know what you are doing as
you run? In your hip joints? In your ribs? With your arms? Your abs?
Your toes? With your attention?
This
workshop is open to those who compete in races, those who have never
run but would like to, those who used to run but it hurt too much, and those who think
that running is impossible. The
short running parts of the workshop are optional for those with
injuries, or who do not run, and the learning and discoveries in the
floor lessons (like most things Feldenkrais) can be applied to myriad
aspects of life beyond running.
$75 prepaid, $80 drop
in. Cost of the class will include an mp3 CD of several of the lessons
from the workshop for your home use. (We recently saw a similar workshop advertised in the Chi Running system
at 3 times the cost! It's a deal!)To register online, click here.
