National Physician's Assistant Week is this week, October 8-12. We would like to say thank you to Nancy Lounds with Christus St. John Hospital for all the work she does through the school-based clinic, located at Dickinson High School and funded through Christus St. John Hospital.

The school-based clinic is open on school days to all Dickinson ISD students, from any campus, and is a contributing factor in helping keep our students healthy and in attendance at school.

DHS Band places second out of 40 bands at Galena Park Contest

The Dickinson High School Gator Marching Band is on a roll this year bringing home a second place overall finish out of 40 bands competing at the Galena Park Marching Contest this past Saturday. In addition, the band was also awarded the Best Percussion Section honor.

The DHS Band will now concentrate on hosting the Gator Marching Festival on October 20 at Sam Vitanza Stadium, where they will perform as a non-competing band. This all leads up to UIL Region competition, which is scheduled for Tuesday, October 23 also at Sam Vitanza Stadium.

Way to Go Gator Band!!!

Hundreds of Gator supporters lined the streets Wednesday afternoon as an hour-long parade of floats and other entries from Dickinson ISD schools and also community groups made its way down FM 517 to celebrate the annual Dickinson High School Homecoming. The parade ended at Sam Vitanza Stadium where everyone took to the stands for a community pep rally, including the introduction of the Homecoming Court and crowning of the Homecoming King.

Senior Adrian Gonzales was crowned Homecoming King. He was joined by the other four Homecoming King finalists -- Diego Arenas, Marcus Bell, Daniel Contreras and Kenny Nguyen.

The full Homecoming Court was introduced including the freshman, sophomore and junior representatives, as well as the five Homecoming Queen finalists. The Homecoming Queen will be crowned at approximately 6:40 p.m. before the start of the game this Friday, October 12.

Sophomore Duchess and Duke-Aylin Luna and Ricki Aranda
Junior Princess and Prince-Denise Salinas and Weston Currington

The parade included about 50 entries all decorated for the Gators. The winning parade entries were first place, Senior Class; second place, Dickinson High School FFA; and third place, DISD Robotics.

The Homecoming Game is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, October 12 at Sam Vitanza Stadium against Clear Creek High School. Don't forget to come early for the crowning of the queen at approximately 6:40 p.m. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the Dickinson High School Field House from 7:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday or at the gate Friday evening. Dickinson ISD earns top honors
for financial accountability

The financial practices in the Dickinson Independent School District have received high honors through three different state programs in place to measure financial accountability of school districts and other state agencies.

Dickinson ISD received a "Superior Achievement" rating through the Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas (FIRST) through reports released in September. The perfect score of "70" was earned through FIRST, which is a program through the Texas Education Agency in place to ensure that school districts are held accountable for the quality of their financial management practices and their financial resources. Dickinson ISD has received a Superior Achievement rating all 10 years the system has been in place.

The 2012 Financial Allocation Study of Texas (FAST) report, released this month by the State of Texas Comptroller's Office, awarded Dickinson ISD with four stars. The report examines academic progress and spending in all Texas school districts and gives each district a rating of one to five stars. The report shows that although Dickinson ISD's spending per pupil is rated as "Very Low," students perform well on state mandated tests.

The Texas Comptroller's Office also recognized Dickinson ISD as a Leadership Circle Gold Member for the third year in a row. The Leadership Circle program began in 2009 to recognize local governments across Texas which strive to meet a high standard for financial transparency online. Gold, silver or bronze awards are based on the amount of criteria the local government meets with having financial documents available online for the public to view. The Gold Star award is the highest level a local government can earn through the Leadership Circle program.
