DISD sixth grader turns fishing hobby into college scholarship
Chance Davis, a Barber Middle School 6th grader, is finding a fun way to pay for college. The 11-year old recently won a $20,000 scholarship to the college of his choice by bringing in the largest fish, 8 pounds 13 ounces, in the Coastal Conservation Association's STAR (State of Texas Anglers Rodeo) Fishing Tournament this summer. "This was just two ounces smaller than the winner last year," Davis said with pride. "The cool thing is I caught him with shrimp I caught myself. A lot of other fishermen use bait they buy or other stuff, but I catch my own bait. I caught the fish when I was fishing at Kemah." This isn't the first tournament Davis has won. He won $250 a year ago when he brought in the largest fish. He says fishing is a hobby he loves to do with his friends and his family. Hughes Road Elementary outdoor classroom and garden receives facelift and expansion
Hughes Road Elementary showed what great things can happen when the community comes together for a common goal. Never was that more evident than last weekend when the school, with help from Lowe's Home Improvement Store, the Dickinson ISD Education Foundation and many community and school volunteers, transformed the school's property into an immaculate garden and outdoor classroom.
The garden, which had been limping along for the past five to seven years with a few plants, trees, and shrubs, received a much-needed facelift and expansion of planter boxes, trees, park benches, tables and much more that will allow for an outdoor learning environment.
The project, which is coordinated by Hughes Road first grade teacher Tonya Phifer, is funded by an initial grant of $2,300 from the Dickinson ISD Education Foundation, plus a $5,000 Toolbox Grant received from Lowe's.
