Hughes Road planning work weekend
for garden and outdoor classroom
A work weekend is planned on Sept. 22-23 at Hughes Road Elementary for the school's garden project and outdoor classroom. Lowes Home Improvement will be working with teacher Tonya Phifer and any willing volunteers on planting and construction items in the outdoor area. They will start at 7 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 22 and continue through Sunday. Water, Gatorade and lunch will be provided to volunteers. Volunteers are asked to bring shovels, gloves, sunscreen and bug spray.

Celebrating Grandparents Day... Calder Road hosts breakfast with students
Approximately 150 grandparents visited Calder Road Elementary on Monday for a special breakfast with their grandchildren in honor of Grandparents Day.
After munching on donuts, kolaches and fruit, grandparents got a chance to see the school and drop their grandchild off at their classroom.

Teacher Spotlights...
- Congratulations to Megan Turner, a special education teacher at Dickinson High School, on winning an iPad from the Apps for Children with Special Needs organization. She is one of only 140 recipients out of 3,000 entrants to receive an iPad, so far.
- Congratulations to Michelle Brown for being recognized as a University of Houston Honors College Great Leader for the College of Education. Brown is an eighth grade Algebra teacher and Math Department Head at McAdams Junior High, as well as the district's 2011-2012 District Secondary Teacher of the Year.
- Congratulations to Ashley Lewis-Cook, a pre-kindergarten teacher at Silbernagel Elementary, on publishing her new book, "Beautiful Me."
