Calder Road fourth graders develop "slime" business and donate profits to local family
As part of a cross-curricular unit on the free enterprise system, the students in Jennifer Lorenzo's fourth grade classes at Calder Road Elementary developed a business to make and sell slime. After students made a name for their company, "Slime-O-My," the group obtained a $50 loan from the school's PTO for supplies. Then, they conducted market research to determine the supply and demand levels of various slime colors. They made and sold more than 300 individual packages to students and made a total of $233.95. After repaying their loan to the PTO and having a small ice cream party, the students donated the remaining $150 to a Dickinson family who recently lost their home in a fire.

K.E. Little reinforces math skills with after school activities and games
In order to build second graders' math fluency, K.E. Little Elementary academic coaches Cathy Hart, Jennifer Hong and Esther Pool, worked with 30 students after school for nine weeks. At the end of the time, students were given a chance to show their families what they learned using dominoes and dice games that reinforce number sense.
Two lucky students, Danny Krall and Beatriz Ramirez, went home with brand new bikes as door prizes. This was all funded by a $1,000 grant from Wal-Mart.
