The Dickinson High School Boy's Powerlifting Team finished in second place at the State Powerlifting Meet in Abilene, Texas this past weekend. DHS also had a competitor take home the gold medal. Kenny Nguyen won the 123 pound class with a state record bench press of 300 pounds.

Powerlifter Lorenzo Castandena also placed fourth in the 242 pound class while Tim Jenkins placed third in the Super Heavy Weight class.

Justin Gary finished in the top ten in the 181 pound class.

This is the first time the DHS Powerlifting Team has ever had a state title winner and a top team finish at the state meet. Way to go!! 

Congratulations to the McAdams Junior High choirs for their outstanding performances at UIL competition. The Tenor Bass Chorus received a rating of "Excellent" for their stage performance while the Bel Canto Choir received a rating of "Superior" on their stage performance and a rating of "Excellent" on their sight-reading performance. The Symphonic Choir received a rating of "Superior" on both their stage and sight-reading performance. A Superior rating is the highest rating that a choir can receive in UIL competition. As a result, the Symphonic Choir earned the Sweepstakes Trophy!

Congratulations go out to Barber Middle School Principal Bonnie Fried for being selected as a semi-finalist for the 2012 H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards. HEB received more than 800 applications from educators all over Texas. From those applications, only 150 teachers, 50 principals, 33 districts and 20 Early Childhood applicants were selected as semi-finalists.  

The month of March marks National Athletic Training Month. The Dickinson High School Athletic Department would like to take this opportunity to recognize the student trainers for all of their hard work throughout the year.

The student trainers for the 2011-2012 school year are: Yvette Lara, Paola Olvera, Miranda Gonzales, Kelsey Menasoff, Brittany Frankovich, Aliess Walker, Marissa Cantu, Abraham Parada, Sydney Widenhouse, Allicia Strambler, Dakota Hourtienne, Michelle Marks, Victoria Vo and Lauren Traylor. They are led by the district's Head Athletic Trainer John Harmon and Assistant Athletic Trainer Jenna Tubbs.   

Three Dickinson High School students involved in the school's Rachel's Challenge project recently attended a luncheon hosted by AMOCO Federal Credit Union, where they were able to meet and hear a presentation from Rachel's father, Darrell Scott. Pictured are, left to right, Faith Weeks, Scarlette Grimes, Shelby Pena, Darrell Scott, DHS Principal Kellie Edmundson and DHS Parent Liaison Ellen Silvas. The group presented Scott and the Rachel's Challenge sponsors with plaques and showed the group a moving video produced about the DHS Rachel's Challenge project. The local Rachel's Challenge sponsors were AMOCO, BP Texas City and the Galveston County Sheriff's Department.
