Attendance boundary changes approved for 2012-2013 to Bay Colony & Calder zones
Approximately 130 students currently zoned to Calder Road Elementary will be moving to the Bay Colony Elementary zone for the 2012-2013 school year. The changes were approved by the Board of Trustees at the March 19 board meeting.
There are two main sections of homes that are included in the boundary changes. The first is the neighborhood behind the HEB shopping center at FM 646 and I-45. These are the homes that can only be accessed by the street in between the HEB shopping center and Walgreens.
The second section of homes is the area on the north side of FM 517 between I-45 and FM 646. These include the subdivisions of Dove Meadows, Bordens' Gully and the Retreat in Bay Colony townhomes.
Faster than anticipated housing growth in the Calder Road area has increased the student population at Calder Road to nearly 800 students this school year and this number is expected to increase as more homes are completed. Based on student enrollment this year, the changes would give Bay Colony approximately 800 students and Calder Road around 650 students. The lower number at Calder Road will rise; however, as the new homes are finished over the next few years.
Parents will receive a letter if their student(s) will be moving to Bay Colony Elementary.

Alternative Education to be combined at Dickinson Continuation Center campus
The Dickinson Alternative Learning Center and the Dickinson Continuation Center will both be housed at the DCC campus beginning next school year, after the Board of Trustees approved the changes at the March 19 meeting. The district is continuing to look for ways to reduce costs due to funding issues facing school districts across Texas because of the 2011 Texas Legislative actions.
The Dickinson Continuation Center, which currently has approximately 75 students, provides a positive alternative for students who may have experienced difficulty achieving success in a more traditional high school setting. DCC offers accelerated credit, individualized instruction, flexible scheduling, computer-based instruction, credit recovery and credit-by-exam to help students earn their high school diploma.
The Dickinson Alternative Learning Center is the district's alternative campus for students in grades 4-12. Enrollment does not exceed 39 students at any one time.
The combined enrollment of just over 100 can easily be achieved at the DCC campus. By closing the current DALC facility and sharing staff members, the district will save approximately $600,000 over the next three years.
