DISD students win big at the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo art contest

Rodeo Art winnersSeveral Dickinson ISD students were chosen for honors at the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo art contest this year. Their artwork competed against hundreds of winners throughout the Houston area and once again proved that Dickinson students are among the best.

Sophomore Anna Novak's artwork was selected to go the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo art auction. Anna has now been selected into this prestigious group two years in a row.

Sophomore Brittany Rhodes received $2,000 for her sculpture in the new 3D purchase category. Sophomore Christina Maxwell and freshman Joyanna Mazzone also received scholarships to the Glassell School of Art in Houston for a summer session of their choice. Anna Novak and Christina Maxwell were both chosen to attend the Western Art Academy in Kerrville, Texas. They will spend two weeks at the academy sculpting and two weeks painting during the month of June. Only 40 students in the entire contest were selected to attend this respected school. Good job, Gators!!!
Dickinson student wins photography contest

Dickinson High School sophomore April Walsch was awarded Best of Show for her photo in the College of the Mainland's Photography Exhibition. The award winning piece entitled "Morning Fog," was selected from 1,300 entries, including entries from adults and photography majors.

April also entered a second picture and both of her photos were selected to be in the College of the Mainland photography show. Only 120 photos, all shot on a camera phone, were chosen by a professional judge. April received a prize of $100 and is now considering majoring in photography in college.
DHS Gatorzillas earn second place at
San Antonio robotics competition

The Dickinson High School Gatorzillas competed against 62 teams around the nation and finished in second place. This year the team was asked to have the robots perform several tasks during the game, while working with two alliance teams. The team was asked to make their robots play basketball with a few twists. There were several baskets and bridges in the game and at the end of the game the teams got extra points for balancing the all three alliance robots on a bridge.

At the end of regular play the Gatorzillas were in eighth place and in the finals. After winning the first round of finals they went on to compete against the Robonauts from Clear Creek in a head to head competition. After a very intense contest, the Dickinson Gatorzillas and their alliance teams came out on top by being the first alliance in the nation to balance all three robots on the bridge. In their next battle, the Gatorzillas lost but finished the competition in second place. All in all, the Gatorzillas came home with three awards and had a team member named Star Safety Captain. Now the team is going to be busy getting ready for the Lone Star Regional at the George R. Brown Convention Center on April 5-7. Everyone is invited to come out and cheer the Gatorzillas on!!
