McAdams student advances to
Houston Spelling Bee 

 

On Feb. 17, Melanie Sturgeon, a 7th grader at McAdams Junior High School, competed in the Galveston County Spelling Bee and was the overall winner. Melanie will now go on to represent all of Galveston County in the Houston Spelling Bee. The Spelling Bee will air live on PBS (Channel 8) at 2 p.m. on March 31. Melanie's English teacher is Elaine Cates, and her Spelling Bee Coach is Amy Morneau. Good luck, Melanie!  
Gator Relays at Sam Vitanza Stadium Feb. 25

The Dickinson High School boys and girls track teams will host the 2012 Gator Relays on Feb. 25 at Sam Vitanza Stadium. The field events will start at 8 a.m. and the preliminary running events will begin at 9:30 a.m. The finals should start around 1 p.m. Thirty-three teams will be competing in Gator Relays this year. 

McAdams boys basketball earns four district championships; first time in school history  

 

The four McAdams Junior High boys basketball teams shut out the competition this year with four district championships. This is the first-time in school history to have all four teams earn the top title in the same year.

 

The 8A and 7A teams were both named the South Zone Champions, before moving on to earn the District Championships. The teams are coached by Tony Carse and Matt Klingenberg, respectively. 

  

The 8B and 7B teams also brought home a District Championship for their seasons. They are coached by Aaron Webb and Brendan Flannery, respectively. Way to go, Gators!

McAdams Girls 7B Basketball Team
earns South Zone Championship
   

 

The McAdams Junior High girls 7B basketball team recently earned the title of South Zone Champions. The team is led by Coach Germaine Spells-Barrett.

 

Team members include: London Robinson, Ebony Wiltz, Kiondra Matthews, Brionne Carroll, Deja Dotson, Rachel McCall, Alexis Floyd, Shelby Davis, Parris Gaines and Cheyla Perry.

Dunbar teacher nominated for award

Congratulations to Juliet Weigand from Dunbar Middle School for being nominated for the A+ Teacher Award for Kidnnected Magazine. Weigand was nominated by one of her former students. Her picture and an article will appear in an upcoming issue of Kidnnected Magazine. Weigand is the drama teacher at Dunbar Middle School. She has held that position for 12 years. 
Self-defense class open to public

The Dickinson High School SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) group will sponsor a self-defense training class for all Dickinson students, families and community members on March 8. The class will be held in the Dickinson High School gym from 6-7 p.m. Jason Carter, owner and chief instructor from 646 Martial Arts, will give a martial arts demonstration and provide training tips.
