Board approves Single-Member
Redistricting map

The Board of Trustees approved 7-0 at its regular December meeting Monday, the proposed map for Single-Member Redistricting. The district is required to go through this process every 10 years after the United States Census is complete. With the guidance of the law firm of Thompson and Horton, LLP and demographer Dennis Harner, the new map divides the number of residents in each district to between 6,981 and 7,715.

The map now must be sent to the United States Justice Department where it must be evaluated and approved before being implemented. The timeline is to have the new map in place for the May 2012 school board elections.

The maps can be viewed on the school district website homepage at www.dickinsonisd.org. A large version of the map is also on display in the Education Support Center, at 2218 FM 517 East.

Please note that this IS NOT a map for school attendance boundaries. The map and the single-member redistricting process is solely for the purpose of defining which area of the school district a particular board member represents.

with fun Christmas wish list project

DHS Christmas gift wish list project
The Dickinson High School Sports and Entertainment Marketing class put their market research and target marketing skills to work this week to find out the top items DHS students wanted for Christmas.

Students in Kimberly Edgar's class polled 800 students, including 200 from each grade level and 400 girls and 400 boys total, to see what their top choices were for Christmas gifts. When looking at the school as a whole, money, clothes, shoes, cars and technology-related items topped the list.

A big Gator thank you goes out Caleb Platt, from Calder Road Elementary. Caleb is a third grader in Jennifer Reed's class. Caleb and his family donated a large number of fleece pullovers to the winter clothing drive this year. Leaders of the clothing drive say all of the students and staff at Calder Road Elementary brought in many donations and will help make the holidays happier for many needy families.
