Stuff the Bus Food Drive a success with 25,000 items and $5,700 in donationsFamilies in the Dickinson Independent School District will benefit from more than 25,000 items of non-perishable food and other products plus an additional $5,700 donated to the M.I. Lewis Social Service Center Food Pantry this week as part of the school district's annual Stuff the Bus Food Drive.
M.I. Lewis serves families throughout Dickinson ISD, so the donations stay local to help DISD students and their families in need. Through a relationship with the Houston Food Bank, M.I. Lewis can use the monetary donations to purchase up to $10 worth of food for every $1 donated allowing the food pantry to purchase around $50,000 worth of food from this year's donation. The monetary donations also give the food pantry funds to purchase perishable items like meat that can't be donated in the district's food drive.
Dickinson ISD campuses have a friendly competition each year to see which campus can collect the most items based on how many students attend the campus. This year, first place goes to Calder Road Elementary, followed by Bay Colony Elementary in second place and Dunbar Middle School in third place.
Congratulations to all campuses on their efforts to give back to our community. Here is a breakdown of campus totals and the top class at each school.
Analise Nixon, a Calder Road Elementary first grader, got creative to help her school collect the most items in the district. With the help of her parents and grandma, she went around her neighborhood collecting food from neighbors for Stuff the Bus. She is shown with her dad, Truman Nixon, and her teacher, Tiffany Pool, with some of the 600 items she collected. Way to go Analise! Special thanks to the Dickinson High School Junior Air Force ROTC for helping pick up food donations at the campuses earlier this week.

Bay Colony students judge teacher's work
Teachers at Bay Colony Elementary took on a little role reversal this year by submitting their own Rodeo Art projects and letting the students serve as the judges. Every student got the chance to tour the art gallery, write about their favorite pieces and then vote. The pieces were submitted anonymously, so the students did not know who they were voting for. Amanda Durham took home 1st place, Jennifer Bennett finished in 2nd place and Katharine McMahon received 3rd place. The students said they had so much fun judging the art and now they are inspired to create their own Rodeo Art projects!!
