Veteran's Day events planned across the district
Veteran's Day will be celebrated across the district this year headlined by some very special visits from the Wounded Warriors Project. The Wounded Warrior Project supports injured service members by getting them public aid or helping them with assistance programs. The soldiers will visit Dunbar Middle School at 8:30 a.m. Nov. 8 and Hughes Road Elementary at 9 a.m. Nov. 9.
Many other Veteran's Day Programs are also taking place around the district. On Nov. 10, K.E. Little Elementary will host a book fair and a patriotic music program. Third grade students will be performing in the program at 6 p.m. Also on Nov. 10, Calder Road Elementary will host its Annual Veteran's Day Program at 6 p.m. Third graders from the school will be performing along with the AFJROTC from Dickinson High School. On Nov. 17, third graders from San Leon Elementary will be leading the school's American Proud program in honor of Veteran's Day. The program will start at 6 p.m.

Nearly 1,300 children to be served in 2011 Empty Stocking Program
Hundreds of families lined up Tuesday and Wednesday at Dickinson High School to register their children for the Empty Stocking Program, sponsored by the Dickinson Interfaith Lay Group to provide toys and clothing for children each year. At 10 a.m. this morning, the group had reached 1,250 children, which is the approximate number the group can serve each year. The remaining dozen or so families still in line at that time were served, which would bring the final number of children to approximately 1,300. DHS students in the Peer Assistance Leadership (PALS) program, Spanish classes and vocational business classes got involved in the community event by babysitting young children while the parents went through the registration process, providing translating assistance for Spanish speakers and entering data on those registering for the program.

DISD Thanksgiving Luncheon Nov. 11
Dickinson ISD would like to invite all of the parents out to each campus to celebrate Thanksgiving with their students on Friday, Nov. 11. Our Thanksgiving Luncheon is a special tradition that has grown each year since it began over 20 years ago. Principals invite special guests to serve this meal to our most important customers, our students and parents.
To make sure everyone is in the Thanksgiving Spirit, each server is given a special holiday apron and chef hat to wear. Last year we served 11,175 meals, of which 3,800 were to parents and guests. Elementary and middle schools serve anywhere from 900 to 1200 meals that day.
This year's menu includes: Turkey and dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, a homemade dinner roll, and a special pumpkin dessert.

DISD seeing PINK in October
During the month of October, Dickinson ISD students and staff were seeing pink. It was all in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and their efforts raised money for cancer research. Over at Dickinson High School, staff members (some of which are pictured above) were allowed to wear jeans for a day if they gave a $5 donation. The effort raised $1,160.00! The money was donated evenly to the American Cancer Association and the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Not to be out done, the DHS Volleyball team sold pink shirts for $15, while the Student Council decorated the school and parking lots. The proceeds from the pink t-shirts were donated to the Rose Foundation. The DISD Transportation Department also got in the spirit by wearing pink while transporting the students to the schools. Way to go, DISD!
