Hughes Road Elementary students
learn how to stay safe

laurasrecoveryStudents at Hughes Road Elementary had some important visitors today from the Laura Recovery Center for Missing Children. The Laura Recovery Center is based out of Friendswood and is named after Laura Smithers, a 12-year-old girl, who was abducted and murdered in 1997.

Two speakers from the center taught the students the importance of asking for permission from your parents before talking or going anywhere with an unknown adult. Different scenarios were set up to show the students how to get help in a bad situation. The speakers also discussed the importance of being smart when chatting with others on the internet.
Calder Road Elementary students
enjoy Writer's Celebration

writerscelebrationLast Friday Mr. Hinojosa's 4th grade class at Calder Road Elementary enjoyed their first writer's celebration. The students were celebrating the completion of their first published stories. During the event, the students got the opportunity to read their classmate's stories and provide positive feedback.  After the exercise, the students celebrated with popcorn and cookies.
DHS Freshmen to participate
in "Reality Town"

Ninth graders at Dickinson High School are excited to be participating in a program called Reality TownŽ on October 12.

This one day event will teach the students the financial realities of adulthood as they apply for jobs and take on families. They will learn just how difficult it is to juggle their monthly budget as they purchase a car, secure housing, pay for childcare, and a myriad of other monthly expenditures. Through this fun, hands-on experience, students learn the value of a dollar, learn to plan for their futures, and gain a greater appreciation for the financial pressures faced by their parents.

Houston Rodeo visits
Bay Colony Elementary

rodeo dayThe Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo took over Bay Colony Elementary on Friday. Fourteen stations were set up around the school to teach the students about Texas, livestock and rodeo history. The students got the opportunity to pet some horses, learn to two-step and act out the Battle of the Alamo. The students dressed the part in boots and hats.
