DISD schools honor 9/11 heroes

On the anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Dickinson ISD students took the time to honor those who lost their lives ten years ago.

calder9/11 At Calder Road Elementary several fourth grade students participated in a readers theater remembrance piece. After the students read to their peers about the tragic events they were then instructed to discuss how the world was changed that day.

dcc9/11Students at the Dickinson Continuation Center worked hard to put together a 9/11 display in the main hallway. Each student added their name and a star on the American flag. The display has pictures and new articles from that fateful day. It also shows the hope and patriotism of the American people and how the events helped us come together as a nation.

Several other campuses also honored the 9/11 anniversary. Students in Gifted and Talented program at McAdams Junior High put together projects about some aspect of the 9/11 attacks and presented them during class. At Dickinson High School, the Air Force Junior ROTC students honored the anniversary with a presentation during class.

The Dickinson High School football game Sept. 9 against Dobie High School was kicked off with a tribute to the 9/11 anniversary. A B-25 bomber plane from the Lone Star Flight Museum flew over the stadium at the end of the National Anthem, while a large American flag was displayed across the football field and athletes from both football teams entered the stadium carrying American flags.

Rachel's Challenge encourages
students to start a chain reaction

Rachel's Challenge hand project"Start your own Chain Reaction of Kindness." That was one of five challenges given to Dickinson High School students earlier today as they spent the morning attending a Rachel's Challenge assembly and completing other activities designed to challenge students, parents, businesses and community members to create a more positive, friendly, pro-active environment within the community.

The Rachel's Challenge message will also be delivered during a community event tonight from 6-7 p.m. in the DHS Auditorium. It is free and open to the public. The Rachel's Challenge events are sponsored by AMOCO Federal Credit Union, KHOU Channel 11, the Galveston County Sheriff's Department and BP Texas City.

Rachel Scott was the first student shot and killed at Columbine High School in 1999. Rachel kept a diary which outlined her ideas for a better world and her desire to make a difference through random acts of kindness. The Rachel's Challenge Program was formed by Rachel's family and has grown to a nationally recognized event.

Rachel's Challenge hand displayDuring the presentation, five challenges were given to students that were important beliefs of Rachel.

1. "Look for the Best in Others" - Eliminate prejudices and don't judge people.

2. "Dream Big" - Go after whatever it is you want to do. Write down your goals and keep a journal or diary. Share your story with others. Believe in yourself and you will be way ahead in life.

3. "Choose Positive Influences" - Choose good role models and reach out to others.

4. "Speak with Kindness" - Words can hurt or heal. Choose kind words that lift up people.

5. "Start your own Chain Reaction Kindness" - Practice random acts of kindness.

DHS students will be taking the next step by starting a FOR (Friends of Rachel) Club on campus to encourage the challenges outlined today and encourage random acts of kindness.
