Hats Off to Dickinson ISD logoIt is official! The Dickinson Independent School District is a 2011 Texas Education Agency Recognized School District for the first time. In order to be Recognized, at least 80 percent of all students and all student subgroups must perform well on the TAKS test.

Protege Teachers of the Year announced

protegeAfter the 2010-2011 school year, principals and adminstrators chose DeAnna Williams and Lisa Brown as the Protege Teachers of the Year. Both teachers just completed their first year of teaching and each made a positive impact on their campus. DeAnna Williams is an art teacher at Calder Road Elementary School and Lisa Brown teaches Language Arts at Dunbar Middle School.

The ladies were selected out of a group of 38 first-year teachers. All of the new teachers go through training, are observed throughout the year and are assigned a mentor teacher. The award was given to these two teachers because both excelled in classroom performance and student interaction.

Dickinson High School's AP Scholars named

Dickinson High School is pleased to announce the 2011 AP Scholars. This year DHS had six students become AP scholars: Issac Di Napoli, Sarah Milton, Agustin Muniz, Allison Overton, Stephen Phan and Alexander Southerland. Nam Phan and Enrique Rameriz were selected as AP scholars with honor while Cynthia Rameriz and Hoaihuong Truong were named AP scholars with distinction.

To become an AP scholar a student must make a score of 3 or higher on three AP exams. To become an AP scholar with honor, a student must make a 3 or higher on four AP tests and receive an average score of at least 3.5 on all tests taken. An AP scholar with distinction must make an average of 3.5 on all AP tests and score at least a 3 on five of those AP tests. Way to go, Gators!!!

Road construction near DHS starts soon

Owens Dr.Traffic flow around Dickinson High School will be a little complicated during the first half of the 2011-2012 school year. Galveston County will have road construction underway on Owens Drive on the east side of Dickinson High School which will turn the road into a one-way street with only southbound traffic allowed. The road upgrades are planned from Aug. 8 to Jan. 5. The southbound only traffic means drivers will not be able to turn onto Owens Drive off of FM 517. Parents and the community are asked to plan now for backup routes when coming to the high school. This will also impact traffic during home football games, especially for visiting team crowds which park on that side of the high school complex and stadium area.
