Reminder: Memorial Day is a school day

The previously scheduled student/teacher holiday on Memorial Day, May 30, 2011, is now a regular school day for Dickinson ISD students and teachers.

The calendar change is due to the missed day of school on Feb. 4 for the bad weather conditions experienced in the area. Texas Education Agency policy requires that the district makeup the missed instructional day.

With the makeup day falling on Memorial Day, teachers can incorporate the significance of Memorial Day in their lessons.

Gearing up for the end of the school year

The last day of classes for Dickinson ISD students is Thursday,
June 2. Dickinson High School Graduation for the Class of 2011 is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 3 at Sam Vitanza Stadium. Those attending graduation are asked to keep in mind that due to road work, traffic on Caroline Street behind Dickinson High School, will only run northbound. There will be no southbound traffic. Please keep this in mind when planning your route to and from graduation.

For those unable to attend graduation, the ceremony can be viewed live through a link available that evening on the school district website at www.dickinsonisd.org. Watch for next week's Gator Bytes for more graduation/end of the year information.

Special guest and Dickinson resident Diane Doty came to the celebration to teach the students about Texas history. Diane is a Daughter of the Republic of Texas and had a family member fight in the Battle of San Jacinto. A big thank you goes out to Ruth Laird for organizing the event. Happy Birthday Texas!

Big Al gets a new look

Big Al

Dickinson High School's Big Al is sporting a new look thanks to Amoco Federal Credit Union. The old mascot uniform was worn for several years and needed to be retired. So when it came time to buy a new one, our friends from Amoco stepped up in a big way and donated a brand new uniform to the school! Look for our new and improved Big Al at all the DHS football games in the fall. Thanks Amoco!
