Dickinson ISD receives incentive for being energy efficient

incentive checkThe Dickinson Independent School District was awarded an incentive check of $12,099.50 from Texas-New Mexico Power for increasing the energy efficiency of the lighting and air conditioning systems in four district buildings. The no-cost program, known as the SCORE program, provided DISD with technical and financial support while helping to identify and implement energy efficiency projects.

The incentive was determined by the total amount of energy the district will save. The high efficiency lighting and air conditioning systems will save more than 167,700 kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, equivalent to preventing the carbon dioxide emissions of approximately 23 passenger vehicles, according to Environmental Protection Agency calculations.

DISD installed these energy saving items in 2010 in the Education Support Center, the new Barry Lussier Field House, the Agricultural Facility and the HVAC system at the Dickinson Continuation Center. These changes will help the district save nearly $17,000 a year.

DHS soccer coaches honored for
outstanding seasons

Lisa Manis and Ilija Milovanvic were named District 5A Coaches of the Year. Manis has coached the Lady Gators soccer team for 14 years. The team finished with an overall record of 14-8-6. The Lady Gators finished third in district and went to the playoffs for the first time since the district moved to 5A.

Milovanvic led the boys soccer team to an overall record of 14-5-5. The Gators had a deep playoff run and were even named Area Champs. This is Milovanvic's fourth year with Dickinson High School. The coaches were selected by their peers in District 24 5A.

DHS students place at WordMasters Challenge

Congratulations to DHS freshman Rashon Johnson for earning a perfect score at this year's WordMasters Challenge. Rashon was one of only two ninth graders across the county to earn this honor. Other DHS students, Chris Dowdy, Taylor Henderson and Deja Samuels all placed among the top 101 ninth graders in the country. More than 53,000 students participated worldwide.

The WordMasters Challenge asks students to analyze literature and then answer questions. The students are under the direction of Donna Kautz.

Crime Stoppers is a success at DHS

The Crime Stoppers program is building momentum at Dickinson High School. Last week officers gave students over $300 for accurate tips. The tip money does not come from the school, it comes from the Galveston County Crime Stoppers Program. Officers say these tips are helping the Galveston County Sheriff's Office keep the school safe. They ask anyone with important information about a crime at DHS to call 281-229-STOP.

Your call will remain anonymous.
