Dickinson ISD Education Support Center open house a success

esc open houseAt least a couple hundred visitors came out last Thursday to help DISD celebrate its new Education Support Center. Tours of the building were given by central office employees and then the group moved outside for the ribbon cutting. DISD Superintendent Dr. Leland Willams thanked the community for its support during this project. School Board President Mike Mackey and Citizen's Facility Task Force member Ernie Deats spoke as well. The ESC building opened March 21 and was completed $2.7 million under budget.

DCC students have their artwork displayed

Barbara Crabtree, art teacher at Dickinson Continuation Center, gave her students a challenge by asking them to participate in a "Doodle 4 Google" contest. Many of the students did a great job and their projects will be on display at the Dickinson Railroad Depot & Museum from April 18th - 30th. The winners of the contest will be announced May 27.

Drive One 4 UR School event brings in

big bucks for DISD schools

drive 4 your schoolFord Motor Company, McRee Ford of Dickinson and Dickinson ISD Education Foundation are working together to help raise money for Dickinson ISD Schools as part of Ford's Drive One 4 UR School program. Dickinson community members put pedals to the metal and helped raise over $5,000.00 for DISD Schools by test driving Ford vehicles. McRee Ford worked with the Dickinson ISD Education Foundation to host the one-day event on April 12. Approximately 275 people raced down to Sam Vitanza Stadium, and for each participant who came from a unique household, Ford and McRee will donate $20.

A piece of DISD history for sale

esc ornamentThe Dickinson Historical Society still has ornaments of the Historic Dickinson School also known as the Raymond "Pop" Gillis Administration Building. The group chose this facility for their 2009 ornament. Many central office employees have now moved to the new ESC building just down the street, but this historical building is still the temporary home to DISD's Child Nutrition Department and Technology Department.

The Historical Society chose to celebrate this building because it meant so much to the community when it first opened in 1929. Contact the Historical Society at 281-534-4367 if you are interested in purchasing an ornament. The ornaments are $10 each.
