Anna Novak artwork on display at new

Dickinson ISD Education Support Center

Anna Novak artworkSpring Break proved to be an exciting time for the Dickinson Independent School District. Not only did the district open up its new Education Support Center, but we also got a beautiful piece of artwork made by one of our talented students to display.

Acquiring the artwork was a long and difficult feat, but thanks to many generous teachers and supporters we got the ball rolling.

It all started when Anna Novak's drawing was selected for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo
art auction. Anna is a freshman at Dickinson High School and has won Best of Show at the Dickinson ISD Rodeo Art Contest two years in a row. Dickinson teachers and administrators put their money together to try and win Anna's drawing, but when Mike LaTouche, DISD director of ancillary services, got to the auction he realized the district didn't have enough money to win the art piece.

Mike did not give up though, he started telling everyone he met about Anna's drawing and what it meant to our district. Howard and Donna Webster were truly touched by this story. The Websters agreed to bid on the drawing and get a print made for the district, but when the bidding reached over $11,500, the Websters had to bow out.

Another bidding group, consisting of Lynn and Lillian Nunez, Ken and Gail Jacobson, Rose Modica Scott and Carruth Gerault,       ended up winning Anna's drawing for $12,000. The Websters went over to meet them and share the reason why they were bidding. It didn't take long for the winning group to meet Mike and Anna and hear DISD's story. While waiting in line to pick up Anna's piece they had just won, the group handed Mike the rights to the drawing and asked for it to be displayed in the new DISD Education Support Center. As you can imagine, it was a very exciting moment for all those invloved. All they asked for in return was prints of the piece and a donation plaque honoring them.

The piece is now displayed for all to see in the ESC lobby. DISD wants to give a big thank you to all those involved for making this possible.

PALS relay important message to students

The Peer Assistance and Leadership (PALS) class at Dickinson High School has been performing Rock Bottom. Rock Bottom is a play that promotes drug and alcohol awareness among teens. Each of the three PALS classes put on their interpretation of making their peers aware of this serious situation. The students do not talk during the play, but they pick music to coordinate with what they were acting out on stage. Some students portrayed drug dealers and others a specific drug, such as cocaine or tobacco. There were also students portraying parents or a boyfriend or girlfriend. The PALS students did feel they relayed a very important message and believed that the show was a success.
