DISD celebrates Texas Public Schools Week
In the month of March, Dickinson ISD will celebrate Texas Public Schools Week with special events and open houses. This year's theme is: Education. It's BIGGER here. Over the next few weeks, each school will host an open house and the new Education Support Center will have its official open house and ribbon cutting. The Child Nutrition Department and the Galveston County AgriLife Extension will also host "Better Living for Texans, Back to Basics" for parents and their children. The sessions will help parents with meal planning and teach them how to save money on food. We invite parents and community members to join us as we showcase the success of DISD students, staff and facilities.

Barber students are shooting stars
Barber Middle School and Communities in Schools have some news that's out of this world. Last May, Barber students were nominated to participate in the "Student Signatures in Space" program sponsored by NASA and Lockheed and Martin. Aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery, those signatures were launched into space last Thursday. Currently the signatures are orbiting Earth inside the International Space Station. After the mission, the student's poster will be returned with an official NASA certificate verifying that Barber Middle School's signatures flew in space. Also included will be a picture of the space crew with the poster. Way to go, Barber! |
McAdams math club attends first competition
Sixteen students from the McAdams Junior High math club participated in a math competition at the University of Houston. All of the McAdams students took an hour long algebra test, 13 of them also took a calculator test and 10 of the students participated in the quick-click smackdown. The students competed against 500 other students from the Houston area, ranging from 7th graders to seniors in high school. The math club sponsor, Michelle Brown, says this is the first competition for the club and they plan to attend again next year. |
