National School Bus Safety Week reminds students, community about bus safety

The Dickinson ISD school buses traveling across the district each morning and afternoon are transporting more than half of the district's 9,000 students to and from school each day. With approximately 5,000 students taking advantage of this service each day, it is always important for students as well as the community to remember the importance of bus safety.

A special emphasis is placed on bus safety this week as school districts across the nation honor National School Bus Safety Week. The 2010 theme is "Cross in View: It's the Right Thing to Do." DISD Transportation Department employees will be out at the elementary campuses this week delivering a packet for each student, which includes a "Buster the Bus" coloring page listing the school bus rules, a school bus safety crayon box and a "School Bus Safety" yellow rubber wrist band.

The DISD Transportation Department has a section on the district's website at www.dickinsonisd.org, which can be found by clicking on the Departments tab and then Transportation. A special feature on their site includes a place where parents can enter their address and find out to which school they are zoned, bus numbers and bus pick up and drop off times. In addition, the website lists the school bus rules.

National School Bus Safety Week also provides the district and the community a special opportunity to recognize the dedication of the 110 Transportation Department employees serving Dickinson ISD students each day.
BCES students share school supplies with students in Africa through teacher's trip

Even on the other side of the world, Dickinson ISD students are making a difference. Last week some students in Africa received school supplies from some very giving Bay Colony students. You may be asking how this happened and really it all started with a teacher who wanted to give her students a special lesson.

Fourth grade teacher Regena Collier thought her husband was crazy when he told her he wanted to climb some mountains in Tanzania, Africa. That didn't sound like fun to her at all, but when she started researching the trip, there was a section about visiting schools and helping the African students. That was when she knew she had to accompany her husband on this crazy trip.

"I thought it would be exciting and emotional to go into the villages and schools, they don't have what we have here," said Collier. For that reason, she asked her students to send some of their school supplies, and they filled her suitcase with books, pencils and folders.

Collier gave the African students their new supplies, but that's not all she did. Collier also took the African students pictures of her students from Bay Colony Elementary and now she will bring her students pictures of their African counterparts. She believes seeing these pictures will help her students learn about the African lifestyle and culture.  She thinks this trip could form a connection between the two groups of students and she hopes that some of them even become pen pals.

One thing is for sure though; all the students involved were very excited about their journey to Africa. Even if they didn't really make the trip, they've already gotten so much from their teacher's experience.

"They're buying into it and it's really bringing the world to them. I'm bringing them an experience that some of them will never get to have," said Collier.

Reality Town gives DHS freshman real life experience with financial responsibilities

Dickinson ninth graders stepped out of the classroom and into the real world last Wednesday as the high school gym was transformed into something called "Reality Town," a place where the students became 30 years old with jobs, families, mortgages and responsibilities. These kids learned firsthand that real life is not easy.

"It put things in perspective for me and makes me appreciate my parents more because I had to spend a lot of money, said ninth grader Robert Garate.

In Reality Town, Garate was a lawyer with a great salary, but still, he had financial problems.

"I'm a lawyer and my check bounced. Are you kidding me? That's just my luck," said Garate. Reality booths were set up all around the gym with volunteers from the community assisting in the exercise. Students had to visit the booths and learn about their finances, paying taxes, childcare, car notes, etc. The goal was to keep your checkbook balanced while also maintaining your financial responsibilities.

Volunteers say watching the students go through this exercise was very rewarding.  "I am so very proud of the seriousness and the behavior of the kids. DISD should be so very proud of what they are producing to face the real world. I wish every adult in Dickinson could witness this amazing event," said volunteer Ernie Deats.

Barber students making school connections through after-school and weekend clubs

The school day doesn't end at 2:30 p.m. for some Barber Middle School students. The campus has more than 200 students participating in 12 different clubs that meet after school and on weekends.  Some are academic, some are social, and some are for student motivation.  The students then spread the word about how fun school can be and help create a positive atmosphere on the campus.

The Barber clubs in which students can participate include: Youth Exploring Science, Barber Space and Rocket Club, Gator Bots, Lovely Ladies of Intellect, D.R.U.M, Drama, Student Council, Yearbook, Twilight Club, Barber Story Club, National Elementary Honor Society and Reading and Math for Struggling Students. The last club listed, Reading and Math for Struggling Students, was actually a student-initiated club started by the school's bilingual students who saw a need and decided to fix it. Way to go Barber students!

DHS Band headed to UIL Region Marching Contest at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Pearland

Months of hard work will come together when the DHS Marching Band performs at UIL Region Marching Contest at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19 at the Pearland ISD Stadium, "The Rig." The stadium is located at 3775 S. Main on the Pearland High School campus. Bands earning straight "1" scores will advance to the UIL Area Marching Contest, scheduled for this Saturday, Oct. 23 in Galena Park.

The band had a good showing in The Woodlands this past weekend at the Lonestar Preview Marching Contest where they advanced to the finals after placing ninth out of 30 bands in the preliminary contest. The band also earned ninth place out of 10 bands in the finals.

Everyone is encouraged to come out and support our Gator Marching Band at UIL contests this week. Go Gators!
