Board approves Electrocardiogram project for high school student athletes

Dickinson High School student athletes will have access to an electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG) through a new program approved 6-0 by the Board of Trustees at their Oct. 4 board meeting. Dickinson ISD is one of only two districts in the state known to provide the service for student athletes.

Modeled after a program in Cy-Fair ISD, the electrocardiogram screening will help identify athletes who may have a previously undetected heart condition which could lead to sudden cardiac arrest. Parents will be asked to sign a consent form and release of liability with the option to opt out if they do not wish for their son or daughter to have the screening.

The Board approved up to $7,000 for start-up costs which includes the equipment and a $5 per student charge for supplies and the cost for a physician to interpret the results. After the first year the only cost to the district would be the $5 per student charge for new athletes who have not received the screening. The district is also looking for any area groups or businesses who would like to contribute to the program to help defray some of the costs.

In working with Cy-Fair ISD, data indicates that approximately 90 percent of students tested will have normal ECG screens, approximately nine percent will have minor abnormalities that will not interfere with further participation in strenuous activity and approximately one percent of screened students will have cardiac abnormalities that will limit or curtail their further participation in strenuous physical exercise.

Under the direction of the district Athletic Director Tom Mooney and Athletic Trainer John Harmon, the Athletic Department hopes to have all screenings complete by Feb. 1. For more information or to help sponsor the program, contact Mooney at 281-229-6592.
Seven DHS students earn AP Scholar Awards

Seven Dickinson High School students recently earned AP Scholar Awards in honor of their exceptional achievement on AP Exams.

Richard Nguyen and Michael Hughes, both 2010 DHS graduates, qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.  DHS senior Cynthia Ramirez qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams.  DHS 2010 graduates Lorna Hirsch, Anastasia Holdcraft and Joshua Sharer, along with senior Stephen Phan, all qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP exams with scores of 3 or higher.

The College Board's Advanced Placement Program provides willing and academically prepared students with the opportunity to take rigorous college-level courses while still in high school, and to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both, for successful performance on the AP Exams. About 18 percent of the more than 1.8 million students worldwide who took AP Exams performed at a sufficiently high level to also earn an AP Scholar Award.
San Leon fourth graders have 'bright' ideas

Fourth graders at San Leon Elementary were in for a treat as they got to participate in a very exciting lesson. The students are currently studying electricty, but this isn't something that can be taught by reading a book. Instead, the kids got to experience it firsthand.

Last Thursday all of the fourth grade classes were split up into small groups. Then, they were given an electricity kit that included batteries, wires, light bulbs, and switches. Here's the trick- they were told to make the light bulbs light up, but were given no instructions!

As you might have guessed these "bright" fourth graders didn't need instructions anyway. Several groups were successful; some were even able to light up six light bulbs on their grids! The students were all smiles as they showed off their final products to their classmates.
