Homecoming ends with 37-14 Gator win
Desiree Ramirez and Tyler Boatright named
2010 DHS Homecoming Queen and King

A beautiful double rainbow that formed over Sam Vitanza Stadium after a rainstorm Wednesday afternoon was a sign of bright things to come as the Fighting Gators Varsity Football Team scored an impressive 37-14 win over Creek Creek High School during the Homecoming Game Friday night, Sept. 24. The game also marked the Gators first performance in district competition for the 2010 season.

Kicking off the game was the crowning of Homecoming Queen Desiree Ramirez and the introduction of Homecoming King Tyler Boatright.

The Homecoming festivities began on a rainy note earlier in the week as a big rainstorm arrived just at the end of the Homecoming Parade on Wednesday resulting in the cancellation of the community pep rally. The rain stayed away Thursday allowing students to have a successful carnival and except for brief showers Friday morning stayed away most of Friday allowing for a rain-free game.

DHS Marching Band prepares for contest season throughout October

With the first breezes of the fall season blowing in this week, the community has a chance throughout October to watch another fall season favorite -- marching band contest season. The community is invited to come out and support our own Dickinson High School Marching Band at a month full of contests culminating with the UIL Marching Contests.

The band's October schedule includes:

Oct. 2 -  Galena Park Marching Contest, DHS performs 5 p.m.
Oct. 9 -  Katy Marching Contest, DHS performs 4:30 p.m.
Oct. 16 - Lonestar Preview Marching Contest in the Woodlands
              DHS performs at 5 p.m.
Oct. 19 - UIL Region Marching Contest at Pearland ISD Stadium
              DHS performs at 8 p.m.

At the October 19 Region contest, all bands receiving straight "1" ratings will advance to the Area Marching Contest on Oct. 23 at Galena Park ISD's stadium. From Area, approximately 3-5 bands will be chosen to advance to the state competition Nov. 1-2 in Austin.
"Reality Town" to provide DHS students
with real life financial experiences

Dickinson High School freshman will get the "experience of a lifetime" on Oct. 13 when they participate in "Reality Town." The program, made possible through a Dickinson ISD Education Foundation grant, is a hands-on simulation in which students learn real-life financial concepts such as budgeting, check writing, debit and savings accounts. The program teaches the value of education and its effect on potential earnings. Students take on careers, salaries, families and the associated financial responsibilities of the adult world including taxes, groceries, housing and transportation.

During the two-hour Reality Town simulation, students act out the role of a 30-year-old adult as they learn about tax withholdings and examine their personalized pay stub that includes their name, chosen career, and the Reality Town family scenario. Students are then instructed to make financial decisions regarding their Reality Town family and their monthly expenditures as they visit 22 different businesses including housing, medical, child care, transportation, etc. which are staffed by local professionals, community volunteers and parents.

To make the program a success, DHS is looking for community volunteers. A brief 30-minute training will take place the day of the Reality Town simulation in which volunteers will be given detailed, step-by-step instructions on what to do when students stop by their location to do business and write a check. If you would like to participate, contact La Greta Arrington, DHS Career and College Counselor, at 281-229-6429 or email larrington@dickinsonisd.org.
