DISD plans for President Obama
national address to students

President Barack Obama will deliver a national address to students of America on Tuesday, Sept. 14. Dickinson ISD will not air the address live to students; however, will record the message and is encouraging teachers to use it in their classes as they deem appropriate.

If a teacher decides to show the speech in conjunction with a lesson aligned to Dickinson ISD curriculum, they will send home a district opt-out form informing the parents of their plans. If a parent wishes for their son or daughter to not view the speech, they must sign the form and return it to the school by the date indicated on the form. Students who are not viewing the address will be provided other educational opportunities appropriate to their grade during that time.

"Schools will not delay instruction for participation in the live broadcast. Instead, the district will record President Obama's address and encourage teachers to incorporate it into their classes. We will also provide a link to the speech on the district's website. This will provide parents the option to view the speech with their students and the schools the choice and flexibility to share President Obama's remarks at an instructionally convenient time," said Superintendent Dr. Leland Williams.
Barber Middle School to host
Parent Information Night Sept. 16

Parents of Barber Middle School students have an outstanding opportunity on Thursday, Sept. 16 to come to school and learn how to help their children transition successfully and succeed in middle school. The evening will begin at 5:15 p.m. in the cafeteria where parents can hear from the school counselor about the skills necessary to succeed in middle school and get information about the Title 1 programs on campus.

At 6 p.m., parents will be given their child's schedule and will begin a rotation through each of their child's four core academic classes, spending 30-minutes with each teacher. As parents follow their child's schedule, they will meet with each of their child's language arts, math, science and social studies teachers learning about specific academic expectations as well as procedures and routines for each of their child's classes. The evening will conclude at 8 p.m. Please note, this is not a come and go event. The core class rotation will begin at 6 p.m. and last until 8 p.m.

For more information, contact BMS at 281-229-6900.
Early Release Day is Wednesday, Sept. 15

Just a reminder to parents that Wednesday, Sept. 15 is an early release day in Dickinson ISD. All schools will dismiss two hours earlier than normal.
New phone number for Hughes Road

Hughes Road Elementary now has a new phone number. The new main number to the school is 281-229-6700.

For the past several years, the school district has been gradually switching all campuses over to the district's new phone system with phone numbers beginning with 229.  Bay Colony Elementary and Silbernagel Elementary are the only district locations still with 534 phone numbers.
McAdams Junior High working to form Parent Staff Student Association

Plans are underway at McAdams Junior High to form the school's first Parent Staff Student Association (PSSA). The organization will provide the school another way to build relationships with parents, students and the community and to provide opportunities for students.

The school sent home flyers about the PSSA organization with students last week. Yearly dues are $5. For more information, contact Lisa Douglas at McAdams Junior High at 281-229-7171.
