DISD ends first week of school year with almost 9,000 students enrolled
With the first week of school complete, nearly 9,000 students are filling the classrooms of Dickinson ISD campuses. This represents an increase of 200 students over the start of the 2009-2010 school year.
The most notable increases have been at the middle school and junior high level. Barber and Dunbar middle schools are both up by 50 students each, while McAdams Junior High has 70 more students than last year.
The opening of Calder Road Elementary alleviated the overcrowding at the district's elementary campuses with each campus now having between 625-725 students. |

M.I. Lewis provides 690 students with a backpack of school supplies for new year
When school started this past week, 690 Dickinson ISD students had a backpack full of needed school supplies for the year thanks to the efforts of the M.I. Lewis Social Service Center. Each year, hundreds of parents who are unable to purchase the requested items for their students, register with M.I. Lewis to receive school supplies. This year, M.I. Lewis spent more than $9,000 on school supplies, while volunteers with the agency worked many hours dividing up the supplies for each student. The week before school starts, each campus picks up the supplies for their students to have them ready for the first day of school.
Dickinson ISD is grateful for the support the M.I. Lewis Social Service Center and its volunteers provide our students and their families throughout the school year. |
