A Note From Mrs. Brown
Tuesday, September 18, 2012
Dear ECC Families,
Thank you for coming to parent conferences. I hope you found it informative and meaningful. We really are a team and try hard to make things work well for your children. Your input and support are highly valued by each of us.
I want to explain a bit about our yoga grant. As I mentioned at the Back to School Night parent meetings, the Jois Foundation gave EUSD a generous grant to fund yoga for all students. A component of the grant is a research piece involving USD and the University of Virginia. The research requires a careful collection of data, including monitoring the resting heart rate of all students, once a week for ten weeks. It also includes initial height and weight measurements for each child. All of this is done confidentially and away from other students. All data collected will be stripped of identifiers as well. The only thing that will be used is a student ID number.
Here is the latest news; ECC was selected as one of four sample schools within our district. In order to collect qualitative and quantifiable data, we cannot begin to actually receive yoga instruction until January 2013. I know this may sound crazy, but we will take our initial ten-week data on heart rate and then we will begin the systematic application of yoga after the Winter Break. In the meantime, our yoga teacher, Miss Christina, will be our "Art" teacher. Very fortunately, she has a B.A. in fine arts! I realize that this all sound s a bit wacky, but I do see it as beneficial to be a part of this cutting edge research as it will ultimately help our children as we learn if yoga, as a part of weekly exercise, does indeed make a palpable difference in each child's overall wellness.
In order to get started, the research team has asked for each EUSD parent to take a quick online survey. The link to the Parent Questionnaire can be found by clicking here or at EUSD.net under the section entitled "For Parents." Please take a moment to log on and take the survey.
Finally, Ladies- join me at the Belly Up on September 28th for our first ever Ladies Night Out to benefit our ECC Fund. The bus leaves our parking lot at 5:00. Tickets may be purchased online using the link in this edition of eNews, or in front of our school this Friday and everyday next week.
Thanks to all, as always,
Carrie Brown

News From Dr. Reeve
September 20, 2012
Drop Off Volunteers
Several ECC parents have graciously volunteered their time to help monitor the traffic flow during arrival and dismissal time. A big thank you goes out to James Patterson for scheduling the parents who volunteer. We would also like to acknowledge the following parents for their assistance:
Debbie Shane Alice Beacham Jen Sutton
Kelley Berman Colleen Schlosser Samantha Vigil
Christy Monko Tracy Henderson
We could use a couple of more parent volunteers. If you are interested in helping, please contact James Patterson in the school office or email, zkjp@mac.com .
Crosswalks
For the safety of all ECC students and parents using the crosswalks, all automobile drivers must come to a complete stop at the crosswalks at the intersection of Paseo Aliso and Via Adelfa. Also, automobiles exiting the school parking lot on to Paseo Tulipero should not be stopped in the crosswalk waiting to exit the parking lot.
Lunch and the Scrap Cart
The new "scrap cart" is now being used at lunch times to separate trash from recycle items. We've notice a lot unopened store bought items and homemade uneaten food items being thrown in the trash. We are not allowed to "recycle" food items due to health and sanitation issues. Have a discussion with your students about if they're satisfied with their lunches or if they're throwing uneaten items. This just might save families money on lunches!

PTA News & Events
Book Fair
This afternoon and tomorrow (before and after school) are your last few chances to visit ECC's Scholastic Book Fair in the auditorium. The book fair is a wonderful chance to support your school and your children's reading habits. Like most acquired skills, the more kids practice reading, the better they become. Giving children the opportunity to choose from a wide selection of engaging and affordable books is a key factor in motivating them to read more. Books can also be bought on-line here Sept. 12 through Oct. 2. and will be delivered to your child's classroom the second week in October. Thank you to all the volunteers who have signed up to help make this year's book fair a success.
Book Drive
Please support ECC's second annual Book Drive happening this afternoon after school and tomorrow before and after school at the front and back gates. The ECC PTA will be collecting gently used or recently purchased books during the Book Fair. All books will be donated to Central Elementary School in Escondido which not only has been identified as a high-need school, their media center was flooded last year due to heavy rains. Read article here. Last year ECC donated over 800 books to Laurel Elementary in Oceanside; we hope to donate the same amount (if not more) to help the students at Central. Please contact Kristin Berry with any questions.
Mission 2 Save
Mission Federal Credit Union deposits will be accepted before school tomorrow, Sept. 28, at the front gate. If your child does not have an account and you would like to open one, applications are located in the office near the PTA box during the week of Sept. 24. Please contact Debra Kirkwood with questions.
Support our Children - Join the PTA Did you know the best way to support your school is to join the PTA? All membership dues go directly toward fudning vital PTA programs. Thank you to the families that have already joined. ECC's PTA Membership Drive ends Sept. 28. If you have not already done so, please click here to donate to the PTA or click here to download a Membership Form. All Membership Forms may be turned into the PTA Box in the front office (under Miss Christy's desk). Please contact Cynthia Stanford with questions. Everyone a Reader Training
If you are planning on volunteering for the Everyone a Reader program, please attend the training Monday, Sept. 24 from 8:15-10:15AM in room 211. Training is provided by the Department of Education and offers excellent tips for readers of all levels. Contact Kristin Berry or Laurie Moselle with questions and to RSVP for this important training meeting. Reflections Contest Happening NOW!
The deadline for the PTA Reflections Arts Contest is Oct. 12. All ECC students are encouraged to participate. Reflections is a national arts achievement and recognition program. This year's theme is The Magic of a Moment. Students may submit works relating to the theme in six different categories: dance choreography, musical composition, visual arts photography, literature, and video production. Student artwork will be displayed at a reception held at ECC on Nov. 14, 2012, in the evening. Please review the program guidelines on the ECC PTA website for more information or contact Angela DeLuca.
