A Note From Mrs. Brown
9 - 11 -12
Dear ECC Families,
Next week starts parent conferences. In order to be prepared, you might try writing down your top three questions and your top three concerns. That way your twenty minutes will be focused and meaningful. Remember that the teacher never wishes to make you feel rushed, but from his or her perspective, there are 24 to 32 parents to serve in a limited amount of time. Thanks for your understanding.
Teachers will be ready to share your child's assessment data from this year and last, if they took the STAR test in May 2012. Also, they will have a goal-setting sheet to write together, based on your child's various abilities and your collective goals for academics and/or social emotional areas.
After the conference, you may wish to stop by our auditorium to see the Scholastic Book Fair. These books are priced well and make great surprises for your children.
Looking ahead, we officially start our K-3 Wheel on 9/25. If your child's usual reply (when asked how his day was) is, "Fine," ask him how his Wheel time went. That should be a lively discussion!
Thanks to all of our glorious volunteers who attended one of the orientations last week; Garden Science or Arts Attack. I hope that you will find your experience working with our students and teachers an excellent source of meaning and pleasure.
Looking forward to a great fall!
Carrie Brown

PTA News & Events
Reflections Contest
Calling all artists! The ECC Reflections Arts Program is coming up soon and all students K-6 are encouraged to participate. Reflections is a national arts achievement and recognition program. This year's theme is "The Magic of a Moment." Students may submit works relating to the theme in six different categories: dance choreography, musical composition, visual arts, photography, literature, and video production. The submission deadline is set for Friday, Oct. 12. Student artwork will be displayed at a reception held at ECC on Nov. 14, 2012 in the evening. Please click here for more information or contact Angela DeLuca.
Important Education Propositions On The Ballot
Prop 38 and Prop 30 are the two initiatives on the Nov. 6, 2012 ballot that have the potential to greatly increase the revenue for our schools. Please take the time to educate yourself on these propositions. The Encinitas Union School District supports the passage of both Prop 38 and Prop 30.
*Prop 38: To learn more about Proposition 38 (Also known as "Our Children Our Future: Local Schools and Early Education Investment Act" or "The Molly Munger Initiative") go to www.prop38forlocalschools.org and be sure to visit the benefits calculator to find out how much our school would receive if Prop 38 passes.
*Prop 30: To learn more about Proposition 30 (Also known as "The School and Local Public Safety Protection Act" or "The Governor Gerry Brown Initiative" go to www.yesonprop30.com.
*Comparison Matrix: Please visit www.educateourstate.org for information on both initiatives. Click here to view a matrix they have created to compare/contrast the two propositions.
Prop 38 Event
A local family is hosting an informational meeting about Proposition 38 on Sept. 26 at 6:30PM. Click here for flyer. (Location is provided upon RSVP.) Anyone interested in learning more about this ballot measure is invited. Topics of discussion include projected revenues for individual schools, as well as how this initiative works and how it will affect your taxes. Please contact Elizabeth Shany with any questions and/or to RSVP to this event. You also may contact Katrina Young or Mary Durfee with any questions related to this event or other ways to learn more about Prop 38.
Quiet Room at ECC
For some kids, recess can be the most challenging time of the day. Starting this week, ECC is offering a Quiet Room to students wishing for a spot to relax and enjoy peaceful activities such as coloring, reading and quiet games. The Quiet Room will be open every Friday during lunch recess with the hope of extending it throughout the week if additional volunteers step forward. Please contact Erika Brucia for more information about this new program.
Book Fair
The book fair is coming next week. Starting Tuesday Sept. 18, the fair will be open before and after school Tuesday through Friday. Don't miss Family Night on Tuesday, Sept. 18 6:00PM to 8:00PM, as well as Dads and Donuts on Thursday, Sept. 20 from 7:00AM to 9:00AM. This is a great time to pick up fall reading books, holiday gifts, or even some books for your teacher's classroom library. Books can also be bought on-line at Scholastic.com/schoolbookfairs Sept. 12 through Oct. 2. and will be delivered to your child's classroom the second week in October.
Volunteers are also needed to make this event a success. Parents, 5th/6th grade students, as well as any of our group organizations (Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, etc.) are invited to help out. Please contact Mamta Malhotra with any questions. See you at the Book Fair!
Book Drive
Please support ECC's second annual Book Drive. The ECC PTA will be collecting gently used or recently purchased books during the Book Fair. All books will be donated to Central Elementary School in Escondido which not only has been identified as a high-need school, their media center was flooded last year due to heavy rains. Read article here. Last year ECC donated over 800 books to Laurel Elementary in Oceanside; we hope to donate the same amount (if not more) to help the students at Central. Please contact Kristin Berry with any questions.
Lace Up Your Running Shoes
Looking for a great way to spend quality time with your kids AND exercise at the same time? ECC Running Club is for you! Join us every WEDNESDAY after school, starting Sept. 26th. Everyone must bring a signed permission slip to the first session to participate. Permission slips, along with detailed information about the program, will be available on the ECC PTA website starting next week.
Bike Rodeo is Back
GET IN GEAR FOR THE ECC BIKE RODEO! Immediately after school (1:00PM) on Friday, Oct. 12, ECC will offer a hands-on learning clinic to provide students with the skills they need to become better cyclists and avoid bicycling accidents and injuries. Professionals from El Camino Bike Shop and the Encinitas Sheriff's Station will be providing bike safety instruction and demonstrations. Participants will have the chance to learn and practice their skills in a fun, non-competitive environment.
Odyssey of The Mind
Odyssey of the Mind is an exciting international educational program that provides opportunities for students to creatively solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. They then bring their solutions to competition on the local, state, and world level. ECC hopes to offer this program to grade levels 2-6, depending on the availability of parent volunteers. We are looking for a few parents to coach students as they work on their selected tasks. Children of all parent volunteers are given a spot on the team. Interested parent volunteers are encouraged to attend an informational meeting Thursday, Sept. 20 from 8:15AM-9:00AM in room 406. Please click here for a Odyssey of the Mind flyer or contact Julie Thompson for more information.
