A Note From Mrs. Brown

9 - 4 -12

Dear ECC Families,

Welcome to week three! Just as predicted, things are starting to settle down a bit as we fall into new routines. This start has been surprisingly smooth and I can only hope that the trend continues. Now, more than ever, it is important to establish rituals that will carry your family through the more stressful times ahead which may be caused by the content in the standards we teach increasing in rigor. By that I mean, the back to school assessments are usually wrapped up by now and teachers start to dive into the "meat" of their coursework. Even in kindergarten, students may start to feel pulled by the expectations imposed by learning new and involved topics. So, what is important at this time is a regular bedtime, sitting at the family table to share a meal each evening, and a dedicated quiet time together to regroup and relax at the end of a long day. We adults need it just as much.

Next week, Monday the 10th brings us to school picture day. Children will be bringing home information for you and there is no need to send any money on picture day. Please see the instructions on the information they bring to you. Also, we are planning and getting ready for parent conference week, September 17-21. You will be notified by your teacher of the conference times available to you. This will be your opportunity to work closely with the teacher to set goals that are meaningful to your child. During conference week, our PTA Book Fair will be set up in the auditorium. Be sure to swing by as the selection is huge and our kids love to see all of the new choices!

Be sure to let Mr. Beccari and the Dad's Club Crew know if you enjoyed last week's ice cream social. It was well done and fun for all of us!

Sincerely,

Carrie Brown

News From Dr. Reeve

9 - 6 -12

We're off to a third great week of school! Please take a moment to read the following items that will assist us in the smooth running of El Camino Creek:

Kindergarten Gates

Just a reminder that the gate next to Mrs. Groves' classroom (Room K-1) in the kindergarten area and the gate located on the back parking lot by the food service building will be locked after the 8:00 AM bell sounds. Parents should leave the kindergarten playground by 8:00 AM so that our fabulous teachers can start their work with your wonderful students. Your cooperation will be appreciated.

Crosswalk News

Drivers must come to a complete stop and not enter the crosswalk to pull out on to Paseo Tulipero when people are using the crosswalk at the school parking lot exit. A reminder, the crossing guard will only cross individuals at the driveway exit and not across Paseo Tulipero. There is no designated crosswalk at the intersection of the school parking lot exit and Paseo Tulipero. Individuals who cross Paseo Tulipero do so at their own risk.

Thank you to everyone for acknowledging the new crosswalk at Paseo Aliso and Via Adelfa (near back gate to the school). Just a reminder that drivers must come to a complete stop and not enter the crosswalk when people are in the crosswalk.

Bicycle Rider Rules

  1. Wear an approved safety helmet.
  2. Follow traffic laws while riding to and from school.
  3. Walk bicycle on school grounds during arrival and dismissal.
  4. Do not ride bicycles on sidewalks.
  5. Park and lock bicycle in designated bicycle rack areas.

Safety Patrol

Fifth and sixth grade students are still needed to help with our before and after school Safety Patrol. Please contact Dr. Reeve, Assistant Principal, in the school office. We also need additional parent volunteers to help with the Safety Patrol before and after school. If interested to be a parent volunteer Safety Patrol member, please contact James Patterson in the school office or email him at zkjp@mac.com. Everyone's help is much appreciated.

Dogs on School Grounds

The health and safety of all El Camino Creek students is a priority at all times. As a reminder, dogs are not allowed in front of the school, in the parking lot and on the school grounds before, during, after school and on the weekends at all times. Your cooperation is needed and appreciated by all El Camino Creek staff members and families.

If you have any questions, please contact me in the school office. Thank you to everyone for your support!

PTA News & Events

District Health and Wellness News
This year the Encinitas Union School District has identified health and wellness as one of our key themes for the 2012/2013 school year. In addition to reviewing and expanding our programs as they relate to health and wellness, EUSD has also been asked to participate in a major research study focused on health and wellness being conducted jointly by the University of Virginia and the University of San Diego. The study will look at ways that public school systems can impact student learning, health, positive relationships and overall wellness through the implementation of a holistic approach to student wellness. Click here for more information about this program from Superintendent Timothy Baird, Ed.D.

Reflections Contest
Calling all artists! The ECC Reflections Arts Program is coming up soon and all students K-6 are encouraged to participate. Reflections is a national arts achievement and recognition program. This year's theme is "The Magic of a Moment". Students may submit works relating to the theme in six different categories: dance choreography, musical composition, visual arts, photography, literature, and video production. The submission deadline is set for Friday, Oct. 12. Student artwork will be displayed at a reception held at ECC on Nov. 14, 2012 in the evening. Please click here for more information or contact Angela DeLuca

Spirit Wear Orders
A few spirit wear orders have been trickling in over the past two weeks. While we want as many people to order shirts as possible,  we need to finalize the order to ensure that we get our shirts in time to enjoy this fall. The absolute final deadline is Monday, Sept. 10. Any orders received after Monday will not be included. Please contact April Sands with any questions.

Caught Being Good
ECC's "Caught Being Good" school wide incentive program is officially underway. Based on the pillars of character (trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship), staff (such as, Playground Partners, Music and Science teachers) can "catch" students demonstrating one (or more) of these character traits. If a student is "caught being good" they will be given a card and entered to win a raffle prize. The purpose of this program is to encourage students to display good character inside and outside the classroom.

Book Fair
ECC's annual Scholastic Book Fair is around the corner and we need your help to make it a Home Run!! The book fair will be opening after school Monday, Sept. 17 and will run through Sept. 21. Don't miss Family Night on Sept. 18 6:00PM to 8:00PM, as well as Dads and Donuts on Sept. 19 from 7:00AM to 9:00AM. This is a great time to pick up fall reading books, holiday gifts, or even some books for your teaacher's classroom library. Books can also be bought on-line at  Scholastic.com/schoolbookfairs Sept. 12 through Oct. 2. and will be delivered to your child's classroom the second week in October.

Volunteers are also needed to make this event a success. Parents, 5th/6th grade students, as well as any of our group organizations (Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, etc.) are invited to help out. Please contact Mamta Malhotra with any questions. See you at the Book Fair!

Book Drive
Please support ECC's second annual Book Drive. The ECC PTA will be collecting gently used or recently purchased books during the Book Fair. All books will be donated to Central Elementary School in Escondido which not only has been identified as a high-need school, their media center was flooded last year due to heavy rains. Read article here. Last year ECC donated over 800 books to Laurel Elementary in Oceanside; we hope to donate the same amount (if not more) to help the students at Central. Please contact Kristin Berry with any questions.

Help Wanted - Arts Attack
Several Arts Attack Supply Room Helpers are needed to keep tabs on art supplies. Helpers will keep track of supplies that need to be restocked and will help maintain a tidy and organized supply area. The time commitment is only 20 minutes every other week. Please contact Jill Puccinelli or Melissa Van Loan for more info. If you are an Arts Attack docent volunteer, please attend a training meeting either tomorrow (Friday, Sept. 7) or this coming Tuesday (see above in "The Week Ahead" Section).

Help Wanted - Garden Science
Beginning next month, each K-3 class will have one Science lesson/month taught in our school garden! Similar to Arts Attack, parent volunteers will teach fun, yet easy science lessons in the garden using the acclaimed Life Lab curriculum. Please sign up with your teacher if you are interested in volunteering for this program. It will be fun! Contact Kathy Hacker with any questions.

Odyssey of The Mind
Odyssey of the Mind is an exciting international educational program that provides opportunities for students to creatively solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. They then bring their solutions to competition on the local, state, and world level. ECC is looking for a few parents to coach students as they work on their selected tasks. Children of all parent volunteers are given a spot on the team. Interested parent volunteers are encouraged to attend an informational meeting Thursday, Sept. 20 from 8:15AM-9:00AM in room 406. Please click here for a Odyssey of the Mind flyer or contact Julie Thompson for more information.
